IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued by some people that recycling the waste products should be the responsibility of government. Although some people might disagree with this statement, I completely agree. Not only because it can reduce pollution and creates jobs opportunities, but also because it can saves natural resources.
There are multiple benefits associated with collecting the waste material should be handled by authority. Firstly, this process can overcome the pollution problems. As recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and prevents air, water, and soil pollution. Take an example of North America, World Health Organization (WHO) conference revealed that around 80% people agreed that our good and pollution free environment comes from the responsible government. Thus, it seems like a positive development in this regard.
Secondly, this development also facilitates the people with job opportunities. As recycling programs need workers to collect, sort, process and reuse waste, which can create jobs. For instance in Japan, Health Minister of Japan Tokyo introduces around 50 jobs in this program after every six months. Hence, this development is indeed very beneficial in this way.
Finally, this can also saves the natural resources as well. As materials such as paper, glass, plastic and metals can be reused, so fewer trees, minerals, and other natural resources are needed.
To sum up, I believe that government should take the responsibility of reprocess the waste material on their own. Not only because it can reduce different kind of pollution and also facilitates people with job opportunities, but also because it can saves natural resources respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of government-mandated recycling. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention pollution, job creation, and resource conservation, the arguments lack depth and specific, logical links to the necessity of 'legal requirements' as opposed to other methods. The examples provided, such as the WHO conference or the specific job statistics in Japan, appear fabricated or poorly integrated, which weakens the persuasiveness of the argument. To improve, focus on explaining *why* legislation is the most effective tool to change public behavior, rather than just listing general benefits of recycling.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to structure the response. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical. Additionally, there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'collecting the waste material should be handled by authority', which lacks a proper subject-verb connection. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'this development' and 'this process', which limits the lexical variety. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'creates jobs opportunities' (should be 'job opportunities') and 'reprocess the waste material' (should be 'reprocessing'). While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is restricted to common, everyday terms rather than more academic or topic-specific collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'it can saves natural resources' and 'it can reduce... and also facilitates'. There are also issues with sentence fragments and awkward syntax, such as 'Not only because it can reduce pollution and creates jobs opportunities, but also because it can saves natural resources.' These errors are noticeable throughout the text, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points.
