Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing whether governments should make recycling a legal requirement, fulfilling the basic task requirements. However, the position is somewhat obscured by convoluted phrasing in the introduction, such as 'the proper distribution of government function and their sheer attention to dirvert aspect'. While the main body paragraphs touch upon relevant ideas—such as pollution control, the establishment of recycling plants, and public health benefits—these ideas are underdeveloped and lack specific examples. The conclusion reiterates the points rather than extending them. According to the Band 5 descriptors, the response addresses the task only partially with ideas that are somewhat limited and under-developed, resulting in a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some overall organization with paragraphing, but there is a lack of clear progression throughout. Cohesive devices are frequently misused, mechanical, or awkward. For instance, transitional phrases like 'The utmost consideration is that' and 'The next compelling sanity is that' are unnatural and impede smooth reading. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks seamless connection. These characteristics align closely with Band 5, where there is some organization but cohesion is inadequate or inaccurate, leading to a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and contains numerous errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'dirvert' instead of 'divert', 'was' instead of 'waste', 'desease' instead of 'disease', 'pollutents' instead of 'pollutants', and 'garbages'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, the noticeable errors and inappropriate collocations ('compelling sanity', 'sweltering concern') cause considerable difficulty for the reader and strain comprehension. This performance fits the Band 4 to Band 5 range, but given the attempt at functional vocabulary and adequate task completion language, a band score of 4.5 is most appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The text demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent, major errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('waste from homes are not recycle'), tense errors ('has been risen with the avert'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also problematic, with multiple instances of lowercase sentence beginnings ('this essay', 'the chances', 'moverover'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 4.5 for grammatical range and accuracy.
