Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to adequately address the prompt. First, it falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 167 words. According to official IELTS guidelines, under-length scripts must be penalised under Task Achievement. Furthermore, the writer struggles to develop a clear position on whether laws are needed to enforce recycling. While the text mentions household waste and shops throwing away items like bottles and crisp packets, the arguments are extremely limited, repetitive, and lack logical elaboration or relevant examples from knowledge or experience. The relationship between government laws and citizen recycling habits is never clearly explored, resulting in a partial and underdeveloped response that aligns with Band 4 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The text lacks overall coherence and logical progression. Information and ideas are arranged disjointedly, making it difficult for the reader to follow a train of thought. Paragraphing is highly ineffective; the text consists of short, disconnected blocks rather than cohesive paragraphs that develop distinct themes. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, and referencing is frequently unclear (e.g., jumping abruptly from household waste to a "coldrinks shop" and then to a "near by school"). Transitions between sentences are non-existent, causing the writing to feel like a collection of random, fragmented statements rather than a structured essay. These features strongly reflect the Band 4 descriptors for cohesion and organisation.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and severely limited. The writer relies heavily on simple, high-frequency words and struggles with correct word choice and collocation (e.g., "bad items gone to dustbin", "wafer packet", "rappers" instead of wrappers, and "dispozable item"). There are frequent word-formation and spelling errors that strain the reader and obscure the intended meaning. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are unsuccessful due to a lack of precision and control. Because the lexical range is very restricted and errors frequently impede clear communication, the response fits the Band 4 criteria for this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical control is extremely weak throughout the text. The response is dominated by heavy grammatical errors, incomplete sentence structures, and incorrect word order, making many sentences completely incomprehensible (e.g., "that is much time government not help in all people so problem is bigger than"). There is a complete lack of complex sentence forms, and even basic structures frequently contain errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Punctuation is also misused or omitted. Because errors are constant and frequently distort meaning, the grammar level aligns with Band 4.
