IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Recycling is a process to utilize useful waste materials to generate renewable products. This is the utmost requirement in today's environment where the clean and eco-friendly environment is a basic necessity for every life on this planet. To make it possible, the government should take responsibility to make green initiatives and eco-friendly projects to provide awareness among the society about the disadvantages and harmful effects of throwing plastic wastes here and there. People mostly throw plastic-related wastes with normal garbage or on streets, not knowing it can cause major disruption to our ecosystem.
Our governments must take legal actions towards recycling by introducing paper bag facilities all over supermarkets and provide recycling bins specifically for plastic wastes such as plastic water bottles, and plastic bags etc. The plastic bags manufacturers should be restricted to avoid these manufactures and their easy supply to vendors, shopkeepers, and other markets where these plastic bags are used for shopping purposes. Recycling bins must be introduced in every street so people must know where to throw plastic related stuff after its usage. The government must replace plastic bags with paper bags to avoid environmental destruction. Legal actions must be taken towards the companies manufacturing plastic bags and selling them to vendors who sell their products in these.
Good companies who work on the basis of corporate social responsibility, excluding the use of plastic bags or bottles should be encouraged and rewarded as a mark of discipline in society. This act will definitely make room for better social performance for other companies as well.
Every street should have a recycle bin to dispose off plastic bottles. Green initiative programs and advertisements must perform this role to aware people about the pros and cons of using reycling bins for their better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether governments should make recycling a legal requirement, presenting a clear position in favour of laws and regulations. The writer covers various aspects, such as introducing recycling bins, banning certain plastic items, and rewarding responsible corporations. However, some ideas are repetitive rather than fully extended, such as the repeated mention of introducing recycling bins in streets and replacing plastic with paper bags. This lack of deeper exploration keeps the task response at Band 6.0. The ideas are relevant and generally support the writer's stance, but they lack the thorough development and extension expected at higher band levels.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from general environmental awareness to specific legal measures and corporate responsibility. Paragraphing is utilised, though some paragraphs are quite dense and contain repetitive points that disrupt the logical flow. Cohesive devices are used, but they can be somewhat mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'must' and basic transitions. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression is occasionally hindered by redundancy, particularly in the final paragraph which restates points already made. Therefore, a Band 6.0 reflects this level of organisation and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'eco-friendly', 'corporate social responsibility', and 'ecosystem'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'dispose off' instead of 'dispose of', 'provide awareness' instead of 'raise awareness', and 'plastic-related wastes'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the occasional inaccuracies in collocation and word formation prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical range is sufficient to communicate the writer's ideas clearly, but lacks the precision and flexibility characteristic of Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'To make it possible, the government should take responsibility to make green initiatives...' and 'Good companies who work on the basis of corporate social responsibility... should be encouraged'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'where the clean and eco-friendly environment is' (article misuse), 'take legal actions towards recycling' (preposition error), and 'to aware people' (incorrect verb form). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, supporting a solid Band 6.0 score.
