Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether laws are needed to increase household waste recycling. The student takes a clear position, stating that they properly agree that government regulations are necessary. Ideas are presented regarding economic growth, job creation, and environmental cleanliness. However, these ideas tend to be repetitive and lack deep development or specific, well-supported examples. The arguments rely heavily on general assertions rather than fully elaborated points. For instance, the claim that new jobs and companies will emerge in the recycling sector is introduced but not thoroughly explored. Consequently, the response fulfills the basic requirements of the task by addressing all parts, but the lack of extended, detailed support places it firmly at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organized into four distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a basic structure and an attempt to show logical progression through transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'further more', and 'In conclusion'. However, the overall cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Referencing is often unclear, such as in the sentence 'everyone will follow that rules and it will be increase suddenly', where pronouns and modifiers lack clear antecedents. Furthermore, sentences within paragraphs can feel disjointed, and the overuse of repetitive connectors impedes a smooth flow of ideas. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion issues prevent the response from achieving a higher score, making Band 5.0 an accurate reflection of the organizational control demonstrated.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical and collocational errors that strain the reader's understanding. Phrases like 'recycle of waste', 'growth economy', and 'dirty place will decreased' demonstrate a lack of control over word formation and grammatical category usage. Attempted less common vocabulary, such as 'beneficial' and 'responsibility', is sometimes misused in context. Spelling is mostly accurate for common words, but word choice errors are noticeable throughout the text, such as 'bad effecting on environment' instead of 'negative effect on the environment'. While the range is minimally adequate to convey a basic argument, the constant inaccuracies place this lexical performance at Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently contain major errors. There is a heavy reliance on modal verbs and conditional structures that are incorrectly formed, such as 'if government will make rules... everyone will follow that rules and it will be increase suddenly' and 'In my country do not strictly rules against recycling'. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with lower-case letters starting new sentences and incorrect capitalization in the middle of sentences. Errors are frequent across simple and complex structures alike, often causing difficulty for the reader and obscuring the intended meaning. These persistent and varied grammatical issues align with the descriptors for Band 4.0.
