IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some critics believes that less amount of waste is being recycled from homes, and government should implement recycling as a legal law to heighten the recyclng rate. This essay agrees that laws are needed to force individuals to recycle more garbage. This essay will demostrate that laws implemented correctly can help reduce overall pollutants by increasing recycling of waste material, moreover if these laws and regulation are broken heavy fines should be imposed.
Laws if implemented in correct manner can substaintialy reduce the amount of pollution in the environment. A huge number of houses and other residential areas will be contributing to recycling if these regulations are followed by individuals. For instance, according to the survey conducted by the University of Cambridge, China has reduced its pollution index by regulating new recycling laws in major cities such as, Beijing and Zhong.
Furthermore, fines and excessive taxes should be imposed to those who break these laws. These fines would act as a reminder to keep house garbage recycled rather than being thrown on streets and lanes. For example, in Dubai cameras are used to monitor everyone's action and even if a minimal amount of waste is thrown outside instead of being recycled substaintial amount of fine is imposed.
To conclude, some poeple advocates that goverment should impose garbage being reused as a legal requirement to increase the waste being recycled and this essay agrees with this statement. Since it decrease the overall ecological harm and by implementiing fines if these laws are broken.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the extent to which laws are needed to enforce recycling. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas presented are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of China and Dubai. However, some of the supporting details, like the specific survey from the University of Cambridge, tend to generalize slightly and could be developed further with more depth. Overall, the task is answered adequately, earning a solid Band 6.5 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "furthermore" and "to conclude," though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the two body paragraphs relies on standard cohesive markers without achieving entirely smooth integration. Despite these minor limitations in flexibility, the logical flow is easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "pollutants," "ecological harm," and "substaintialy." However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including "believes" instead of "believe," "recylng," "demostrate," "substaintialy," and "poeple." Furthermore, repetition of words like "laws," "recycle," and "waste" is evident. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at complex structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present, including subject-verb agreement issues ("government should implement" vs "critics believes"), missing articles ("a substaintial amount of fine"), and punctuation slips. While these errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score, the meaning remains clear throughout, and they rarely impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
