Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been argued among civil law commitees of our society regarding complaints of people that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled and the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. It is necessary step towards our environment and society. Therefore, I strongly agree with the statement as these laws will make our socity much better than before.

My major reasoning behind taking this stance is for reduction of pollution from our environment as lack of recycling has been a major contributor to pollution in daily basis. People are becoming lazier and relaxed by everyday which is a major problem as they are neglecting their responsibility of recycling of waste which gets mixed in our soil, air and rivers resulting in harm to ecosystem as well. The legal requirement will help in regulation of recycling and reduction of pollution. Take an example of Germany, there are laws regarding recycling of waste with strict penalties for offenders, which has turned their whole country cleaner and reduced pollution.

My other significant reason for adopting this stance is the benfits of recycling waste. Recycling waste materials like plastic, rubber and other recyclable material can help in our economy by using these materials again and again after every use and also it can be used to make new material and it is more cost effective. Take an example of many modern countries, the laws of recycling material has helped their economies siginificantly by reducing consumption of their raw materials.

To conclude, by legalization of recyclation of wate from homes governments can play a significant role in reduction of pollution from air, land and aquatic ecosystems. These laws will also be helpful in improving the economy of countries and making life much more easier for everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear position that agrees with the necessity of laws for recycling. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the main body paragraphs present relevant reasons regarding pollution reduction and economic benefits, some arguments remain under-developed. For instance, the point about economic benefits through reusing materials like rubber and plastic is introduced, but it lacks deeper extension. The example of Germany is relevant and supports the argument about pollution, yet the overall elaboration throughout the essay tends to generalise rather than fully explore the nuances of mandatory recycling. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend and support all ideas more thoroughly with deeper explanations or more detailed examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a discernible central topic, such as pollution reduction in the second paragraph and economic benefits in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repetitive use of basic transitional phrases like 'My major reasoning behind taking this stance is' and 'Take an example of'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing could be managed with more sophisticated cohesive devices rather than overly formulaic structures. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without relying on rigid templates.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's ideas. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'ecosystem', 'penalties', and 'cost effective', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation. Examples include 'commitees', 'benfits', 'siginificantly', 'recyclation', and 'wate'. Furthermore, expressions like 'lazier and relaxed by everyday' demonstrate awkward collocation and lexical control. These spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score. To progress further, the writer should expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling accuracy, and aim for more natural collocations when expressing complex thoughts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include article omission and misuse, such as 'It is necessary step' instead of 'It is a necessary step', preposition errors like 'pollution in daily basis' instead of 'on a daily basis', and slight subject-verb agreement issues. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher tier, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences when using complex grammatical structures, ensuring better control over articles, prepositions within phrases, and punctuation.
