IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The governmanet policy can make it a legal requirement because many of the things always waste by homes and it also creates polution in the envoirnment. Government should make some regulations to the people that if people waste the garbage on the roads or at the streets. They will have to pay fine and officers should take a strict actions for makng thi better
But we also talk about the pepple they should feel their responsibility. The nation can clean the country not one person. people should make it better they should not through the garbage to outside of there houses but i am sad to say peoplr often do this. They need tounderstand it will always casuse for your country and for the health of someone else. when the waste will be on the roads the new germs will born from this which is not good for anyone they should collect it at one place where the no one often goes then goverment should arrange that trucks or that people who go on the streets and collect waste from everyone. it will take time to accept that habbit by youth but it could be possible.
I would say both should understand their responsibilities for example if i walk on steert i face bad smells i see alot of garbage at the street everywhere and i feel very bad fro my country so if we dont throw it outside it will not be their and if the roads are clean It will show the country's structure which will create a beautiful vibe for locals and tourists as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, which is characteristic of this level. While the writer manages to express an opinion about whether laws are needed for recycling, the position is not always clearly sustained or fully developed. For instance, the discussion on government regulations mentions fines and officers taking action, but the ideas remain somewhat limited and repetitive. Similarly, the points regarding individual responsibility are under-developed, lacking deep elaboration or extended supporting evidence. The argument moves between personal anecdotes, such as walking down the street and smelling garbage, and broader societal views, but these ideas lack robust progression. To move forward, the writer needs to expand on their core arguments with fully explored consequences and clearer examples that directly address the extent to which legal mandates are necessary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some overall organisation, but there is a lack of clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of ideas within paragraphs feels disjointed and relies heavily on basic, repetitive structures. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, inadequate, or entirely missing, leading to abrupt transitions between sentences and thoughts. For example, sentences often begin with loose referencing such as 'They need to understand' or 'I would say both should understand', without clear signposting to connect the arguments smoothly. Pronoun referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to guess what terms like 'it' or 'this' refer to. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of appropriate cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one with a clear overarching structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. Throughout the response, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, terms like 'govermanet' and 'envoirnment' display persistent spelling issues, while phrases such as 'waste by homes' and 'germs will born' demonstrate inaccurate collocations and word forms. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these choices frequently falter due to restricted control over lexical features. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their active vocabulary, pay closer attention to standard spelling rules, and ensure that words are chosen and combined according to natural patterns of English usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few poorly controlled attempts at complex forms. Frequent grammatical errors are present, including issues with subject-verb agreement, incorrect verb tenses, missing articles, and faulty prepositions within grammatical patterns. For instance, writing 'if people waste the garbage' or 'accept that habbit by youth' reveals persistent control issues over basic syntax. Furthermore, punctuation is frequently neglected or mishandled, leading to run-on sentences that can cause strain for the reader. To elevate the grammar score, the writer must work on building reliable complex sentence structures, ensuring accurate verb forms, and mastering basic punctuation rules to reduce the frequency of errors.
