Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

yes,I think so law is needed to make recycling a part of our everyday thing. Why i agree upon this comes to a major reason and the reason is that, most people who recycle things are thise who have awarenesss about it or those who care about our planet. Vast majority of people who donot do recycling are those who donot have knowledge or are lazy enough to bother. Such kind of people need a driving force to guve them a reason to do this. Now a days two things can serve as a stimulus for people to do recycling. First one is spreading enough awareness to ignite the spirit of saving our planet in people ehich could serve as a driving force but this one is slightly difficult, the reason lies in this fact that spirit of doung something in different people is ignited by different levels of motivation and awareness.Second thing which can serve as a driving force is they are bneing monitered by the givernment ir the law is enforced of they will not follow it then theywill have to bear consequences of their actions. From a psycological research it is illustrated that people bother to do such things whose consequence they will have to face immediately even if they are not doing these things wholeheartedly they will still do it because of the fear of facing the effects. In order to overcome the pollution and increase recycling government have to take this measure. Recycling is very important for our olanet and wellbeing of the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether laws are needed to enforce recycling. You have attempted to discuss both sides by acknowledging awareness as a motivator while arguing strongly for government legislation as the primary driver. However, your ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, particularly when discussing the psychological aspects and the exact mechanisms of law enforcement. To reach a higher level, you would need to extend your arguments with fully elaborated examples and more detailed explanations of how legal requirements would practically change domestic waste habits.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation in your response, with an attempt to introduce your stance and follow it with supporting reasons. However, there is no clear overall progression due to the lack of paragraphing, as the entire text is presented as a single dense block of writing. Cohesive devices are also inadequate and repetitive, relying heavily on basic connectors like 'and', 'or', and phrases such as 'Second thing'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'if they will not follow it then they will have to bear consequences', where pronoun tracking creates confusion. Better paragraph division and a wider, more accurate range of cohesive links are needed to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate for addressing the topic, featuring basic terms such as 'planet', 'pollution', and 'government'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'ehich', 'doung', 'bneing', 'monitered', and 'givernment'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they do cause some difficulty for the reader. You also make awkward lexical choices such as 'everyday thing' and 'lazy enough to bother'. To improve your lexical score, you should incorporate less common academic vocabulary, ensure correct word forms, and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and prone to run-on structures. Your attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, seen in clauses like 'most people who recycle things are thise who have awarenesss about it or those who care about our planet.' There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and articles, such as 'government have to take this measure' instead of 'the government has'. These errors require the reader to occasionally expend effort to decipher your intended meaning. Developing better control over complex sentence patterns and reducing basic grammatical slips will greatly improve this area.
