Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to discuss domestic waste and the role of government, the prompt specifically asks 'To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?', which requires a clear position on whether legislation is necessary. The student's position is not always clear, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For instance, paragraphs focus heavily on listing generic diseases or social problems like littering rather than deeply analyzing the necessity, effectiveness, or limitations of enforcing laws for recycling. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to clearly state and maintain a consistent position throughout the essay and extend their arguments with fully developed examples and explanations regarding legal requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organization evident in the division of paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. While introductory and concluding remarks are present, the internal logic within body paragraphs can be repetitive and disjointed. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or overly mechanical, such as the frequent transitions like 'The utmost consideration is that' and 'The second compelling sanity is that'. Furthermore, referencing and paragraph transitions do not always guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. To improve cohesion, the student should employ a wider and more natural range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about waste and public health. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'Nowdays', 'agrue', 'through' instead of 'throw', and 'trushes'. The student attempts some less common phrasing like 'meticulously handle' and 'germane recycling', but these phrases often result in awkward collocations or inappropriate usage that causes some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and use less common lexical items with greater precision and natural stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly linked complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'municipal solid waste are', 'surveys has shown'), incorrect article usage, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns. For example, expressions like 'waste from homes can leads to' and 'amount of waste are recycled' display persistent errors in tense and agreement. These errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy, ensuring correct verb forms, proper singular and plural agreement, and tighter control over sentence construction.
