IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I believe that law can play an important role in increasing recycling, but they are not the only solution. Education, convenient recycling facilities and financial incentives can also encourage people to recycle more.

The reason why law are useful is that, if government apply this rule then it will be good for citizens because they will follow the rule and that is a beneficial thing for our country. It can focus people to recycle. Fines can discourage people from throwing recyclable waste away. Governments can require households and business to separate waste.Governments can require households to separate recyclable materials. For example; They will save fine money.

The reason why law alone are not enough is that, People need to be well educated and awareness in their own. And recycling facilities must be easily available for all of us. Incentiives and rewarss can motivate people easily. Public awareness can motivate people. In school/college teachers can teach childrens about recycling. Companies can reduce packaging which can help in pollution as well. people may recycle voluntarily if facilities are convienent. For example: well educated is must.

In conclusion, I think that Laws are helpful ans sometimes necessary, but they should be combined with other measures. It sometime may be useful but not everytime.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, and the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 209 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum. While the writer expresses a clear opinion that laws are helpful but need to be combined with other measures, the ideas presented remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the second body paragraph lists basic points about fines and separating waste without fully expanding on how legislation effectively drives long-term behavioural change. Similarly, the third paragraph touches upon education and facilities, but these arguments lack detailed support or specific examples, reflecting a restricted treatment of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the internal flow within paragraphs feels disjointed due to repetitive statements and abrupt transitions. For example, the sentence 'Public awareness can motivate people' immediately follows 'Incentiives and rewarss can motivate people easily', without smooth connecting devices. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and repetitive manner, such as starting multiple sentences with 'The reason why...', which restricts the overall readability and cohesion of the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'financial incentives', 'recycling facilities', and 'public awareness', but these attempts are offset by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling. Examples include 'Incentiives and rewarss', 'convienent', and 'awareness in their own' instead of 'awareness on their own'. These lexical inaccuracies and limited phrasing cause some occasional difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, and plurals. Examples include 'law can play... but they are not', 'The reason why law are useful', 'if government apply this rule', and 'well educated is must'. These persistent errors and awkward sentence formations can cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a lack of control over more complex grammatical patterns.
