IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, a large amount of waste from homes is not recycled. some people believe that the government should make recycling a legal requirement. i agree that laws are necessary to increase recycling but i also think that education and good facilities are important.
Firstly making recycling a legal requirement can be useful. If people have to separate plastic, paper, glass, and other waste more rubbish can be recycled. The government can also give a fine to people who do not follow the rules. For example, every family can be asked to use different bins for different types of wastes. Secondly, education is also important. people should know how recycling helps the environment. schools can teach children about recycling and governments can use TV and social media to spread awareness in homes and public places. This will make recycling easter for everyone.
In my opinion making recycling a legal requirement is a good idea because it can make people take the issue seriously. However governments should not depend only on punishment. They should educate people and provide suitable recycling facilities.
In conclusion laws can paly an important role in increasing household recycling. Strict rules, public awareness and easy access to recycling facilities should be used together. This will help reduce waste, protect the environments and create future for everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear position: laws are useful, but education and facilities should support them. This addresses the question and is supported with relevant examples, such as separating waste into different bins, fining people who ignore rules, and teaching children about recycling. However, the discussion is brief and several points are asserted rather than explained—for instance, you do not show how fines or public education would change household behaviour, or consider any drawbacks of making recycling compulsory. The response also falls short of the required 250 words, limiting the space available to develop your reasoning. Extend the examples and explain why your combined approach would be more effective than relying on laws alone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on legal requirements and education, a statement of your view, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the argument. This coherent structure is a strength. To make progression more developed, give each main idea its own paragraph and connect the explanation more explicitly to the question. The paragraph beginning “Firstly” moves from fines to education without a clear break, while the later paragraph repeats the position already stated in the introduction. More precise referencing and less repetition would make the links between claims and examples smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “legal requirement,” “separate,” “public awareness,” and “recycling facilities,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, the range is limited, with repeated use of “important,” “people,” and “recycling,” and some word choices or forms are inaccurate. For example, “easter” appears to mean “easier,” “wastes” is not the natural form in “different types of wastes,” and “create future” does not express the intended idea clearly. Spelling errors such as “paly” and “environments” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of precise terms for policy, household behaviour, and environmental outcomes, and proofread word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate your main ideas using simple sentences and some longer structures, including the conditional “If people have to separate… more rubbish can be recycled” and the contrast introduced by “However.” The basic meaning is usually understandable, but control is weakened by recurring errors in sentence boundaries, capitalisation, articles, and plural forms. For example, “some people believe” and “people should know” begin sentences without capital letters, and “the environments” uses an unnecessary article and plural. The opening also joins ideas with limited punctuation. Practise accurate sentence starts and endings, and check articles and singular/plural agreement. Adding a few well-controlled complex sentences would also help express cause, effect, and contrast more precisely.
