IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Recycle of waste helps to make the environment clean. So the claim of people who ask for more recycling is a good gesture.

In recycling less energy consumed as compared to production of new product. Less energy means lower emission of carbon. Carbon is a main element that make our environment polluted. In the result different health problem arise. Temprature also increase due to carbon gases. Industries have large role in carbon emission. they not only taking part in carbon emission but also disturbing the drinking water resources.

Government shuld take strict action against those industries who have major role in the emission of green house gasses and shuld ask him to prefere recycle process. So less energy used in production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify recycling as beneficial and mention reduced energy use and carbon emissions, which are relevant to the topic. However, the response does not answer the central question about whether laws are needed to make households recycle: the final paragraph shifts to regulating industries, and your position on legal requirements for individuals is not stated. The health and water-pollution points are introduced but not explained or connected clearly to household recycling. The response is also substantially below the required minimum length, so there is little room to develop reasons or provide the relevant examples requested. To improve, state how far you support laws, explain why, and support that view with specific examples and a counterpoint if appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The ideas follow a basic sequence: recycling is presented as beneficial, its possible environmental effects are mentioned, and government action is proposed. This gives the reader a general direction. However, the response is very brief and has no clear paragraph development, so the argument does not progress from the question about household recycling to a supported conclusion. Connections between points are sometimes unclear; for example, the discussion moves from carbon emissions to health problems, then to drinking-water resources and industrial regulation without explaining the links. The opening phrase “So” and repeated use of “means” also make the connections feel simple. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons, and conclusion, with clear links between each idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “recycling,” “carbon emission,” “drinking water resources,” and “production,” which helps communicate the general environmental theme. The range is nevertheless limited, and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “Recycle of waste,” “good gesture,” and “prefer recycle process.” Spelling errors such as “Temprature,” “shuld,” and “gasses” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Some expressions, including “Carbon is a main element that make our environment polluted,” are difficult to interpret precisely. Build a wider set of accurate terms for household waste and policy, and check spelling and collocations so your ideas are expressed more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use simple structures, and the basic meaning is generally recoverable. There is an attempt at a comparison in “In recycling less energy consumed as compared to production of new product,” but the sentence is missing grammatical elements and is difficult to follow. Agreement and verb-form errors also occur in “an element that make,” “they not only taking part,” and “Government … should ask him.” Articles and plural forms are inconsistent, as in “new product” and “different health problem.” Punctuation is also faulty, with no space after the full stop in “polluted.In.” To improve, practise complete subject–verb–object sentences, accurate agreement and articles, and then add a few controlled complex sentences using “because” or “which.”
