IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that domestic waste is not recycled to much extent due to absence of proper law. Surely, this is one of the main reasons. Other reasons could be lack of knowledge among people and lack of resources to collect the domestic waste and then recycle it. But I think that by implementing strict laws, we could be able to manage domestic waste to very much extent.
Firstly, there is a need to introduce laws through amendments regarding recycling of domestic waste. Then their is a necessasity of proper implement of those laws by authorities. By making people responsible and questioning about their duties will effectively increase the recycling procedure. Hence, they will be afraid of strict punishments and fines and try to minimize the pollution by recycling. Actually, people don't really focus on recycling of domestic product by taking it a minor source of pollution. However, when their will be ruling of law they will consider it as an important matter and try to recycle every little thing. Hence, waste will be effectively reduced and recycling increases. This will create sense of responsibility among the people and they will make a habit of recycling domestic waste.
I have also experienced such implementation of law in Pakistan. Specially, province Punjab has make it mandatory for people to recycle the domestic products. They implement a ban on usage of plastic bags, which are non-recycled and causes a big portion of domestic pollution. The government has strictly ordered to use cloth bags, so that they can be used again.
Consequently, I think that by proper implementation of law we can reduce pollution and increase recycling process to a greater extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe laws can substantially increase household recycling, and you support this with reasons about accountability, penalties and changing habits. The example of restrictions on plastic bags in Punjab also makes the response relevant to the question. You address the role of law, but the discussion is not equally developed across all points. For instance, you mention lack of public knowledge and collection resources in the introduction, but do not explain how these factors affect whether laws will work. The Punjab example would be stronger with a clearer link between the ban and increased recycling, since restricting plastic bags is not itself evidence that household waste is being recycled. Develop this qualification and support your claims more specifically.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction states your view, the main paragraph explains how laws might influence behaviour, and a separate paragraph gives a local example before the conclusion. This makes the argument generally easy to follow. However, progression within the main paragraph is somewhat repetitive: the ideas that people will fear punishment, take recycling seriously and develop a habit overlap rather than building distinct stages of reasoning. Linking expressions such as “Hence” and “Actually” are used mechanically, and “their” in “their will be ruling of law” makes the reference unclear. Organise the explanation into a clearer sequence—enforcement, likely behavioural change, and its limits—and use more precise links between these points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “domestic waste,” “recycling,” “pollution,” “punishments” and “mandatory,” which allows you to discuss the issue. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “implementing strict laws” and “create a sense of responsibility.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “to very much extent,” “proper implement of those laws,” “recycling of domestic product” and “a big portion of domestic pollution.” Spelling errors such as “necessasity” and “Specially” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and precise terms—for example, distinguish between banning plastic bags and requiring households to sort recyclable waste.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional phrasing (“when there will be ruling of law”) and a relative clause (“plastic bags, which are non-recycled”). The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “their is a necessasity,” “Punjab has make it mandatory,” and “They implement a ban,” where agreement or verb forms are incorrect. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in phrases such as “by taking it a minor source of pollution” and “will create sense of responsibility.” Practise accurate past and present verb forms, subject–verb agreement, and article use, then check each sentence for a complete, natural grammatical pattern.
