To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The issue of waste recycling has become a strongly debated topic. It is often argued that the amount of daily garbage being recycled is not enough and only a government policy can resolve this problem. While I accept that some amount of waste is being recycled, I firmly believe
that only leadership policies can make people adhere to the habit of recycling.
There is undeniable evidence of waste being the major cause of land polution across the world. The only way to encourage people to recycle more waste is if goverement bodies imposes different rules on recycling and also set an hefty amounts of fine for people breaking this law. Research suggests that, the reason for the children born with a medical problem is mostly the pollution around their livelihoods and the main cause of it is waste not being discarded properly. Now a days, government bodies are taking this issue very seriosuly, for instance, in Germany, there has been a legal requirements for the citizens to dispose of waste and recycle anything which can harm the environment in any way. Consequently, this results in germany being the second most pollution less country in the world.
Furthermore, not recycling waste is also the main reason for water pollution. Research suggest that around 80% of the water body has traces of plastic and the main reason for that is that beachgoers throw plastic bottles directly into the oceans. British government has imposed fines on such citizens and now they are forced to abide by the rules.
In conclusion, the habit of recycling waste should be a part of our daily life but still, governemnts has a huge role to play in the encouragement of citizens to recycle the waste from their homes properly which will make the world a better place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe government rules are necessary to increase recycling, and you address the question with reasons related to land and water pollution. The examples of waste-disposal rules in Germany and fines for beachgoers in Britain help make the argument relevant. However, some support is under-developed or unclear. For example, the claim that Germany is “the second most pollution less country” is not explained or connected convincingly to recycling laws, and the link between waste and children’s medical problems is asserted rather than demonstrated. You could strengthen the response by explaining how household recycling requirements change behaviour, and by acknowledging whether education or convenient recycling services can also help alongside laws.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs give reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing words such as “Furthermore,” “Consequently,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections between claims are abrupt or unclear. The move from children’s health problems to Germany’s recycling rules, for instance, needs an explicit explanation of cause and effect. The second body paragraph is also brief and could develop its point before moving to the conclusion. Use referencing more precisely and build each paragraph around one main claim, followed by explanation and a directly relevant example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “waste recycling,” “land pollution,” “water pollution,” “legal requirements,” and “abide by the rules.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “a part of our daily life” suit the discussion. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision, including “hefty amounts of fine,” “pollution less,” and “livelihoods” where you appear to mean people’s living environments. There are also inconsistent spellings of “government” and “seriously.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms such as “recycling regulations” and “household waste” would help you express the argument with greater control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction (“The only way … is if…”) and a relative clause (“citizens to dispose of waste and recycle anything which can harm the environment”). The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “government bodies imposes” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “a legal requirements” has an article and number mismatch. In “Research suggests that, the reason…,” the comma interrupts the clause, and “governments has” repeats the agreement issue in the conclusion. Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, and check long sentences for clear clause structure. This would make your varied sentence attempts more consistently accurate.
