IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
An enormous amount of domestic garbage is not recycled yet. Government should apply rules to mange the more and more recycling of domestic waste products. I strongly agree this statement that garbage of homes should be recycled.
Pollution is distroying our environment to a great extent especially, land pollution should be reduced and the best way to reduce land pollution is that recycling must be appriciated. It is also true that waste products of home usage play a devastating role in incresing land pollution. So, the domestic garbage is not recycled properly.
Government should praises the public to play a responsible role in recycling process. I think that government should impose laws at national level and should pass the bills in national assmbly to make people sure that they follow rules to avoid the extension of polltion. Government should take steps that they can form a mangement system at local level so that employees can take garbage from every home. For instance, In punjab an agency named as suthra punjab is established to collect garbage from homes either in cities or in villages and then garbage is recycled. Government should ban the use of plastic bags in markets for shopping to avoid from pollution because they are not biodegradeable.Plastic bags that can be recycled should be used for shopping.
It is positive development that government should implment rules at public level for recycling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear general position in favour of government action, and the example of Suthra Punjab helps make the discussion relevant. However, the task asks how far laws are needed, while your response mainly argues that government should impose rules and organise collection; it does not explain whether laws alone are sufficient or what other measures might help. Several points, such as banning plastic bags and collecting household waste, are introduced but not fully explained in relation to the question. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so there is limited space to develop reasons and examples. To strengthen the answer, state your extent clearly and explain how legal requirements would change household behaviour, supported by a developed example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Your response has a basic structure: an introduction, a paragraph about pollution, a paragraph on government action, and a brief conclusion. The ideas are generally related to recycling, and phrases such as “For instance” signal an example. However, progression is limited: the opening repeats the position, and the final sentence simply restates that rules are positive without drawing the argument together. Connections between ideas are sometimes unclear, particularly the move from household collection to banning plastic bags and then recommending recyclable bags. Develop a clearer sequence—problem, how laws address it, supporting example, and any qualification—and use linking phrases to show the relationship between each point rather than listing proposals.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “domestic garbage,” “land pollution,” “recycling process,” and “biodegradable,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. For example, “manage the more and more recycling” and “avoid the extension of pollution” do not express the intended ideas naturally; “praises the public” is also not the right expression for encouraging participation. Spelling errors such as “distroying,” “appriciated,” and “biodegradeable” are noticeable. Build a more precise set of phrases for policy and behaviour, such as “introduce mandatory recycling rules,” “encourage public participation,” and “reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason-and-result structure beginning “So” and a relative clause in “Plastic bags that can be recycled.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “Government should apply rules” lacks an article or plural subject, while “I strongly agree this statement” is missing a required preposition. In “Government should praises,” the verb form does not agree with the modal, and “It is positive development” needs an article. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention, as in the run-on transition after “biodegradeable.” Practise accurate modal patterns and article use, then check each sentence for a complete, clearly punctuated structure.
