IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argud by some people that there should be a regal laws to increase recycling of waste disposal from the home. Although some might disagree with this notion, I completely agree. Not only because of law make people to follow recycling rules and reduce environmental pollution, but also because of develop a resposibe habit in society.
There are multiple benefits associated with governement rules. Firslty, law make people to follow recycling rules can be considered leading benefit of this approach. As people follow rules and regulation if they violate they are fined for this vilation. Take the example of British, in which a survey conducted in 2023, which showed that a recyling law was developed and if anyone not follow this there should be fine of 300$. it was absorved that about 97% of people follow this rule. Thus, this key point strongly suppoets my agreement with this statement.
Secondly, apart from the regulaton, it also reduce environmental pollution can be cinsidered a major benefir. As when government should impose a restrictions thus everyone should follow this and in such significantly carbon emission decrease. For example, in Fracne due to proper goverment rules and regulation on home waste recycling system. Thus in such case 67% chances is carbon emission decrease. Hence, this argument further strengthens my agreement with whis statement.
Finally, proper laws develop a responsible habit in society can also be labelled a leading benefit of this approach. As when should be proper rules and regulation for everyone to follow this thus in such case proper resposible society develop in which everyone is responsible for their own work.
To sum up, I believe that laws make people to follow recycling rules, reduce environmental pollution with decreasing carbon emission and also develop a habit to everyone and result in a society of responsible persons.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that laws are needed, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons—encouraging compliance, reducing pollution and building responsible habits—and include examples involving Britain and France. However, the support is uneven. The first example gives a specific fine and survey figure, but the source and how the figures demonstrate the law’s effect are not explained. The France example is also difficult to interpret, and the final point about responsibility is asserted rather than illustrated. To strengthen the response, explain the cause-and-effect link for each reason and develop the less-supported points with a clear, credible example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, three body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Finally” and “To sum up” help readers follow the argument, and each paragraph has a recognisable focus. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement, with some evidence of the more flexible organisation expected at the next level. However, connections are often mechanical, and repeated patterns such as “Thus” and “Hence” do not always clarify how evidence supports the claim. Some sentences are difficult to follow, particularly the France example, while references such as “this” are not always precise. Use clearer links between claim, explanation and example, and vary transitions rather than relying on formulaic phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a range of topic-related terms, including “recycling,” “environmental pollution,” “carbon emission” and “responsible habit,” so the main subject is clear. However, the vocabulary is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors make parts of the response harder to understand. Examples include “argud,” “regal laws,” “resposibe,” “recyling” and “suppoets.” Phrases such as “67% chances is carbon emission decrease” and “develop a responsible habit in society” are also unnatural or imprecise. Build a more reliable set of expressions for discussing legislation and environmental outcomes, and check spelling and collocations carefully. More precise wording would make your reasons and examples easier to interpret.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “Although” and “As,” and you use linking structures such as “Not only…but also.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction can make meaning difficult to follow. For example, “law make people to follow” needs a correctly formed verb pattern, while “it also reduce environmental pollution” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “As when government should impose a restrictions” is also structurally unclear. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses. Check agreement and verb patterns, and ensure each sentence has a complete, clear main clause.
