IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Yes, I do agree that not all waste from homes is recycled. We humans tend to throw things away irrationally. But is the government making the right choice of recycling products is the main question here.
For example, the plastic bottles that we threw away, or the shampoo bottles or the old furniture, where is all this going? The waste is going from one place to another and the pollution increases. The poeple who collect waste should be given orders what to do or where to dispatch the waste.
The goverment should make the law for recycling maximum products. The packing or anything kind of should be made in such a way that they are recycled and can be used for 80% of the waste.
Then we would be able to control the pollution in our country. Suppose we say that we should ban plastics. But there are no chances that people in India would do that. Some poeple would do illegally use of plastics either way. So I think goverment should find an alternative for this issue.
Some people that are generous and knowledgeable, knows the situation of india and wants better and green India. For them, Government should make laws that they don't regret living here.
Compared of many countries, if we see we have more pollution that are caused by wastage. Many countries have laws of not throwing out or fines are posessed. But we are still at such a pace where we people won't understand. So government should make strict laws for better India

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You take a position in favour of government action, especially in “The government should make the law for recycling maximum products” and your conclusion that strict laws are needed. You also give relevant examples, including plastic use in India and fines in other countries. However, the response only partially answers how far laws are needed: it does not clearly distinguish legal requirements from other measures, such as providing alternatives or improving waste collection. Several points are asserted rather than explained—for example, the claim that packaging should be recyclable “for 80% of the waste” is unclear. Develop two or three reasons with specific explanations and examples, and state your position more precisely throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has paragraphs and a broadly recognisable movement from the waste problem to proposed laws and a concluding recommendation. However, progression between ideas is not consistently clear. The opening asks whether the government is “making the right choice,” but the essay does not establish what that choice is before moving to waste collection. The paragraph about generous and knowledgeable people is difficult to connect to the argument, and the final comparison with other countries introduces fines without explaining how they support your position. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “But,” and “So” are used, but they do not always show the precise relationship between claims. Organise each paragraph around one reason and use clear references and transitions to connect explanation to evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “recycled,” “pollution,” “waste,” “ban plastics,” and “fines,” which makes the subject clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, sometimes making the intended meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “dispatch the waste” is not a natural way to describe handling it, while “the packing” and “posessed” do not communicate the intended ideas clearly. Spelling errors such as “poeple” and “goverment” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for discussing waste management, legislation, and enforcement, and check spelling and collocations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer structures, including “Suppose we say that we should ban plastics” and “Some people that are generous and knowledgeable…,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and complex attempts are often faulty. Errors in agreement and sentence construction appear in “Some people… knows” and “the pollution that are caused by wastage.” Other examples include “should be given orders what to do,” which is missing a grammatical link, and “Some poeple would do illegally use of plastics,” where the structure is difficult to follow. These errors can make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences with clear clauses, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
