IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Recycling the process to reuse the waste in some differnt ways so that it could not give any harm to masses. Many individuals have this view that the garbage from our residencies is not getting recycled as it use to be. The main reason for this lack of action is due to, no law has been made by the authorities to enhance the recycling process.

There is a need to make a legal rule , so that masses could recycle the extra of their houses. According to me, governement should provide a place to the public where they could throw the garbage and later on according to legal rights the authorities recycle it. it is not necessary to have a law to do some task but in our society it is essential to avoid any conflict between inhabitants of the society.

I have seen many cases, many people burn the waste , instead of throwing. This burning can cause the production of hazardous biogas and air pollution as well-that is very dangerous for human's health. Legal rights can play an important role to make everyone's lives easier. If, rules will be made to recycle the waste , then everyone would be bound to do that task other than their own will.

Rules always play an important role in abiding the individuals to do something. Watse rcycling should be done and it is our moral right ri live in a clean society and - our responsibility to keep it clean.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You take a position that legal rules are needed, and you give relevant reasons, including that rules can encourage compliance and that burning rubbish creates pollution and health risks. However, the response only partially addresses the question: it does not clearly weigh how far laws are needed or consider whether other measures could also increase recycling. The suggestion that authorities provide a place for waste collection is relevant, but its connection to a legal requirement is not explained. The example of people burning waste is also brief and not developed with a specific illustration. The response is one word below the required minimum. To strengthen the answer, state your extent clearly and develop two reasons with concrete examples and explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the issue, gives a view, and then discusses pollution and responsibility. Some links help the reader follow the argument, such as “According to me” and “If rules will be made.” However, the overall progression is limited: the second paragraph moves from legal rules to providing a place for rubbish, then to avoiding conflict, without clearly connecting these points. The final paragraph repeats the idea that rules are important rather than drawing the argument together. Several transitions are awkward or overused, and the reference in “that task” is not very precise. Organise each body paragraph around one main reason, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “recycling,” “hazardous,” “air pollution,” and “legal rights,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “extra of their houses,” “garbage from our residencies,” and “abiding the individuals.” Spelling errors, including “differnt,” “governement,” and “Watse,” are noticeable and reduce clarity. “Legal rights” is also not the intended term when you mean rules or laws. Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully. For example, use “household waste,” “recycling facilities,” and “require residents to separate their rubbish” to express your ideas more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure beginning “If rules will be made” and a sentence explaining the effects of burning waste. However, the range is limited, and complex attempts often contain errors. The opening is a fragment (“Recycling the process…”), while “the garbage … is not getting recycled as it use to be” has problems with verb form and tense. Other examples include “there is a need to make a legal rule, so that masses could recycle” and “If rules will be made,” where the clause structures are not controlled. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, particularly after full stops. Practise complete sentence patterns and accurate conditionals, such as “If rules are introduced, residents will be required to recycle.”
