IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, a large amount of household waste is thrown away instead of being recycled. some people believe that the government should make recycling compulsory by introducing laws. I agree that laws re necessary to encourage people to recycle more, although public awarness and proper easte collection facilities are also important. One main reason why recycling laws are needed is that many people do not take waste management seriously. They may throw plastic bottles, paper and food packaging into general rubbish bins because it is easier than separating them. If the government introduces strict rules and fines for people who repeatedly fail to recycle, they may become more responsible. To provide a clarn example, households could be required to separate plastic, paper and glass into different bins before the waste is collected. This would help reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfills and protect the environment. However, making recycling compulsory will not be enough if people do not have the facilities to do it properly. Therefore, government should provide recycling centres, organise waste collection and educate people about the importance of recycling. In my opinion, laws can make a significant different because they encourage people to change their habits and take responsibility for their waste. Last but not the least, i believe that governments should introduce laws to increase household recycling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that laws are needed, while recognising that public awareness and facilities also matter. You address both the case for legal requirements and the conditions needed to make recycling practical. The examples of fines and separating plastic, paper and glass are relevant, and you explain their environmental benefit. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed; for instance, you could explain how fines would be applied fairly or give a specific example of an effective recycling policy. The response also contains 221 words, so it does not meet the 250-word minimum. Develop your supporting ideas further and add a concluding sentence that draws together the role of laws and practical support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a generally understandable progression: it introduces your view, gives a reason for laws, considers the need for facilities, and ends by restating your position. Linking phrases such as “One main reason,” “However,” and “Therefore” help signal the relationship between ideas. However, the essay is presented as one continuous paragraph, which makes the stages of the argument less clear and limits effective paragraphing. Some connections are also mechanical: “Last but not the least” repeats the conclusion rather than adding a new step, and “In my opinion” restates a position already established. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, supporting arguments, and conclusion, and make each transition show how the next point develops the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “household waste,” “waste management,” “general rubbish bins,” “landfills,” and “recycling centres.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “take responsibility for their waste” are appropriate. However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “awarness,” “easte,” and “clarn”; “significant different” also uses the wrong form. “Strict rules and fines” is clear but could be expressed more precisely in this context. Check spelling and word forms carefully, and build a wider set of accurate terms for policy and waste collection so that your vocabulary is more precise and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If the government introduces strict rules and fines … they may become more responsible” and a subordinate clause beginning “although.” Most of the argument remains easy to understand, which shows reasonable control. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “laws re necessary” is missing “a,” “government should provide” needs an article or plural form, and “a significant different” should use a noun after the article. Capitalisation is also inconsistent, as “some” and “i” begin sentences in lowercase. Proofread for articles, noun forms, and sentence-initial capitals, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
