Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Poeple mostly think that the domestic waste products cannot be recycled and they are useless.I can confidentially claim that the domestic waste products can be recycled by using proper ways of recycling. This is because that I realize that nothing is useless in nature and if people have no need of that thing in their life ,they termed that thing as waste.I really oppose this idea bacause even if anything is not giving us benefit this time, we can use it for many other purposes.Since in some country there are not enough home products so they should benefit of the things that are useless for them now.Recycling basically refers to taking the benefit from a thing that seems to be a waste but actually it is not.For example; in our homes, there are many different metal products that are termed as waste but those products should be used for many other purposes like making metal items etc.Today, people think that there should be a legal system for recycling of waste products .So, I agree that yes there should be a proper recycling system and legal actions for recycling.Government should make the laws so that people can recycle the domestic waste products.Like if I talk about the plastic products , they can easily be recycled .For recycling of any waste product, there should be proper rules and regulations so that people dont hesitate if they want to recycle anything.Government should make the centers or factories for the process of recycling so that people can become able to send them.I agree with this statement that nowadays , not enough of the waste of waste is recycled due to lacking of laws.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear view that recycling should be supported by laws, and you include relevant examples such as recycling plastic and metal products. However, the response only partly addresses the central question of how necessary laws are: it does not explain in much detail why voluntary action is insufficient or how legal requirements would change household behaviour. The opening also focuses on the claim that domestic waste cannot be recycled, rather than directly introducing the debate about whether laws are needed. Ideas such as government recycling centres are relevant but remain general. To strengthen the response, explain the role of enforcement or incentives and develop one specific example showing how a law could increase recycling.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a recognisable sequence: it introduces recycling, gives examples, and then states support for government rules. Some linking expressions, including “For example” and “So,” help connect points. However, the ideas are presented in one continuous paragraph, so the argument lacks clear stages and progression. Several points repeat the same general claim—for instance, that waste can be reused and that the government should make laws—without showing how one leads to the next. Connections such as “This is because” and “Since” do not always make the relationship between ideas clear. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons and conclusion, and make each paragraph develop one main point with clear references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “domestic waste,” “recycled,” “legal system,” “rules and regulations,” and “factories.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of your subject. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “waste products” and “recycling.” Some word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “confidentially claim,” “benefit of the things,” and “the waste of waste,” which can make the intended meaning less clear. Spelling errors such as “Poeple” and “bacause” also affect the accuracy of the vocabulary. Build a wider set of precise terms for household waste and legal measures, and check spelling and collocations when editing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences using clauses introduced by “because,” “if,” and “so that,” as well as shorter statements. This shows an effort to express reasons and consequences. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to follow. For example, “I really oppose this idea bacause even if anything is not giving us benefit this time” has an unclear clause structure, while “there are not enough home products so they should benefit” has problems with sentence construction and agreement. Articles, punctuation and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in the run-on opening. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly connected supporting clause, then check agreement, articles and punctuation.
