IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
I slightly agree to that the government should make some laws regarding recycling of the waste from home and around. Recycling is the process to reuse the waste material like plastic bottles, wraps etc. after make them sterlise and reproduce. Firstly, government should aware people about the how recycling of waste can be fruitful to them and also for environment around them. People can reuse recycled waste of their home and they won't need to buy that thing again. But also, it's not possible for each product to be recycled in home so government should also make centres where people can submit their waste from home and the waste can be recycled collectively. In my opinion, government should make laws just for the necessaity of the recycling of the waste and people should help government in recycling if they can't do in the house.
As per my experience, in our town few year ago, the waste material or garbage from the people's house was thrown away in the streets, in front of their houses and in some open land. No proper recycling processes neither any cleaniness for that waste material. But later in 2025, Government took initiative and developed a department i.e, Suthra Punjab. The main responsibility for that department was to shift any kind of waste material or house garbage to the dump site and from there, it is moved to the recycling centres where most of the daily use product are recycled and available for reuse. This initiative not only has increase the recycling of waste material but also the streets are clean and people are living in a much better enviornment. Through this process, many diseases have been prevented and people are healthy now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a relevant, partly qualified position: you support government involvement, while suggesting that people should also help and that laws should focus on the need to recycle. The local example about Suthra Punjab adds useful support and explains benefits such as cleaner streets and fewer diseases. However, the response does not fully explain what legal requirements should involve or why laws, rather than education and collection services alone, are necessary. The opening focuses on informing people and providing centres, while the conclusion mentions laws only briefly, so the extent of your agreement is not consistently developed. To strengthen the response, explain what households would be legally required to do and how this would complement public education and recycling facilities.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence: you introduce your view, explain possible government actions, and then give a local example. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “But also,” and “As per my experience” help signal the stages of your argument. However, the first paragraph combines several points—education, household reuse, collection centres, and laws—without clearly showing how they connect. The example paragraph also moves quickly from past waste disposal to the new department and its outcomes. Some connections are repetitive or imprecise, and the conclusion is not clearly separated from the supporting discussion. Organise the response into distinct paragraphs for your position, reasons, example, and conclusion, and use clearer references to show how each point supports your view.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycling centres,” “waste material,” “dump site,” and “environment,” and the local example gives you opportunities to discuss practical outcomes. The range is sufficient to communicate your main ideas, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural. For example, “make them sterlise and reproduce” does not clearly describe how materials are processed, and “cleaniness” and “enviornment” contain spelling errors. Phrases such as “daily use product” and “the necessity of the recycling” also need more natural forms. Build precision by learning common collocations for waste management and checking spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional idea in “if they can't do in the house,” and the main message is generally understandable. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and often make the writing less clear. For example, “I slightly agree to that” has an incorrect construction, while “government should aware people” is missing a verb form. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and tense, as in “few year ago” and “This initiative not only has increase.” Some long sentences join several ideas without clear punctuation or grammatical control. Practise accurate sentence frames for stating an opinion, describing past events, and explaining results; then check verb forms, articles, and singular/plural agreement.
