Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Waste recycling is one of the major issue faced by every nation. Many argue that waste produced from homes are not recycled properly and many claim that governments should make it mandatory to increase recycling. I strongly support that government should have strong laws to recycle the waste but it might not be the only way to promote recycling.
The unmanaged waste dumping has created a massive problem of shortage of landfills. The governement should provide free training and free online sessions to educated people about separating the waste. Furthermore, there should be strict rules to separate every waste that comes out of the house into recycle, landfill and organic waste. As a result, it will help in increase of the recycling of glass, bottles and other materials, not only that organic waste could be used to make fertilizers which can be again sold back to people. Thus, a strict rule with proper training could help individuals to encourage recycle as well as lead to sustainable society with less pressure on landfills.
Governement should also support and provide incentives to people who recycles. Governments should build a collection center where individuals would get paid for the amount of waste they recycled. This will lead to a more sustainable ecosystem where recycled materials could be reused which will reduce the pressure on limited resources. As a result, it might lead to less pollution and proper management of waste. Therefore, strict laws with incentives for recycling could encourage people to recycle the waste.
In conclusion, recycling waste from homes could promote sustainability, safer envirnoment and less pollution, and it should be supported with economic benefit and strict law.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you support legal requirements but recognise that laws alone may not be enough. You address the question with relevant proposals, including sorting household waste, training, collection centres and financial incentives. The explanation of how organic waste could become fertiliser and how recycling can ease pressure on landfills gives the response useful support. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed. For example, the suggestion of free training and online sessions is not clearly linked to how laws would ensure participation, and the collection-centre idea could use a specific example of how payment would change household behaviour. Developing these links and weighing the role of enforcement against incentives more explicitly would make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present measures, and the conclusion restates the main position. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “As a result” and “Therefore” help show relationships. The two body paragraphs also separate regulation and incentives reasonably well. At times, however, connections feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “As a result” and “Therefore.” The sentence beginning “As a result, it will help…” also combines several outcomes without a clear distinction between them. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make each paragraph’s central point explicit before adding its supporting consequences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “landfills,” “organic waste,” “fertilizers,” “incentives,” “sustainable ecosystem” and “limited resources.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce precision, such as “encourage recycle,” “increase of the recycling,” and “safer environment.” There are also spelling errors in “governement” and “envirnoment,” and “every nation” is less natural than a more precise expression in this context. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling carefully; this will help you express your ideas more naturally without relying on repeated forms of “recycle” and “waste.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which,” “where” and “that,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors are present, especially with subject–verb agreement and articles. For example, “waste produced from homes are” should use a singular verb, while “people who recycles” needs agreement between the plural subject and verb. The opening phrase “one of the major issue” also requires a plural noun. There are some awkward sentence constructions, such as “it will help in increase of the recycling,” and the long sentence beginning “As a result” would be clearer if divided or reshaped. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
