IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is claimed that individuals are not preferring to recycle the waste of the their homes and it is suggested that imposing it as law by the government will put more consideration on this issue and I believe that the law realated to recyclind is nedded but some other points shouls also get into consideration.
the most compelling reason behind it is that it will reduce the amount of waste created by the homes as all that waste will be used in turing that material into something useful which can be selled to people and they will follow all rules because of fear of fines and penalty which people usaually avoid. moreover, this step will be considered for the well being of the environment and nature because most of the waste will be recycled by the people and used by authorities for better use. for example: in many nations it is tested to make roads from plastic and other type of waste material to develop the cities and sustain environment.
However, there are some other points which also hold some significance as it is really needed to make people aware about the harm of the of not recycling and carelessly disposing waste anywhere.By organising camps or advertising about thsi issue will help to make them awaken about this situation. which will automatically increase the recycling of waste. Apart from that, building good infrastructure of waste collection and proper palce for its disposing will make easier for the people to recycle things
in conculsion, both citizens and government

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You present a relevant position: laws are needed, but awareness and better collection facilities should also contribute. The discussion gives reasons for legislation, including penalties and environmental benefits, and offers a relevant example of using plastic waste in road construction. However, the response only partly develops the question of how necessary laws are: it does not clearly explain whether education and infrastructure could work without legal requirements, or how the approaches should be combined. The final sentence, “in conculsion, both citizens and government,” is incomplete, so the overall position is not fully restated. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or example and finish with a complete conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from the case for laws to other measures, and paragraphing helps distinguish these ideas. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “Apart from that” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves quickly from fines to environmental benefits and road construction without fully linking the points. Some transitions are mechanical, and the final conclusion is only a fragment, leaving the essay without a clear ending. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s main point, then explain and support it in a logical sequence. Check that linking words express the relationship between ideas and that each paragraph is complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycle,” “waste,” “fines,” “penalty,” “environment,” and “infrastructure,” and phrases such as “well being of the environment” show an attempt to use more formal language. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making meaning less clear. For example, “put more consideration on this issue” is not a natural way to describe the effect of legislation, and “used in turing that material into something useful” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “realated,” “recyclind,” and “conculsion” are also noticeable. Build precision by learning common collocations for policy and waste management, and proofread spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional idea about people following rules because of penalties and a sentence beginning “However” to introduce a contrasting view. Nevertheless, complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors can make the reader work to understand the message. The opening sentence has unclear construction and agreement (“individuals are not preferring”), while “it is really needed to make people aware” and “By organising camps or advertising … will help” do not form accurate sentence patterns. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, particularly where a full stop is followed by a lower-case “which.” Practise building complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, agreement, and punctuation during revision.
