IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Certain individuals believe that households do not recyle sufficient amount of waste. They claim that it can be increased by implementing strict laws by the governments. I partially agree with notion as individual's awareness is also needed to mitigate this issue.

To begin, people can take effective initiatives to reuse the waste produced from the household activities. They should not throw different types of waste here and there instead of this they should pay attention in recyling them appropriately. For instnace, kitchen waste can be utilized as a fertilizer for the crops. Moreover, If people gather domestic waste regularly, bio-fuel can be produced from this which can be used to cook food. Therefore, it will contribute to reduce their utility bills.

On the other hand, regulations from the government can play a crucial role to incraese the rate of recycling. If the authority makes mandatory roles for this phenomenon, the citizens will be forced to follow them. For instance, they can fine a penalty if the rubbish is not reprocessd significantly. As a result, general public will be more willing to uese the litter from homes. Apart from this, they can carry out public awareness programmes in order to encourage people and speard proper infromation about the benefits of recycling. Thus, public will be more active to perform such activities.

To recapitulate, I am not fully agree with the viewpoint that actions of governmemnts are enough to make people recycle more of their litter. Individuals should also come forward to make the best use of the waste from household chores.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partially agree that laws are needed, while also arguing that individuals must take responsibility. You address both sides with relevant examples, including using kitchen waste as fertiliser and imposing penalties for incorrect disposal. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not equally developed: the household actions are described generally, while the case for legal requirements would benefit from a clearer explanation of how enforcement changes recycling behaviour. The point about public-awareness programmes is relevant, though it shifts from laws to a complementary measure without explaining how it supports your position. Develop each main reason with a more specific explanation or example to make the argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present individual and government actions, and the conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin,” “On the other hand,” and “To recapitulate” helps readers follow the main stages. However, some links feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always precise. For example, “Apart from this” introduces awareness programmes after penalties, but the connection between these two government approaches could be clearer. In the first body paragraph, the move from sorting waste to producing biofuel and then reducing bills would benefit from more explicit explanation. Use cohesive phrases that show cause, contrast, or consequence accurately, and make references such as “this phenomenon” more specific.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “household activities,” “fertilizer,” “bio-fuel,” “mandatory,” and “public awareness programmes.” These choices show an attempt to use topic-specific language, but several word-choice and collocation errors make the expression less natural, such as “mandatory roles,” “fine a penalty,” and “perform such activities.” Spelling errors—including “recyle,” “recyling,” “instnace,” and “governmemnts”—also reduce accuracy. Some wording is vague or repetitive, particularly “waste,” “litter,” and “this phenomenon.” Build a more reliable range of recycling-related collocations and check spelling carefully; precise phrases such as “make recycling compulsory” and “impose a fine” would communicate your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional sentences such as “If the authority makes mandatory roles…, the citizens will be forced to follow them” and a relative clause in “which can be used to cook food.” These structures help express reasons and consequences. However, some grammatical errors remain, including missing articles in “agree with notion,” incorrect agreement in “I am not fully agree,” and awkward sentence construction in “they can fine a penalty.” There are also issues with plural and verb forms, as in “the authority makes” when referring to government bodies generally and “it will contribute to reduce.” Aim to make each complex sentence accurate before adding further complexity, and review articles, agreement, and verb patterns.
