IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I strongly vouch for the idea that government should make policies regarding recycling of the waste from homes .

It is highly crutial that goverment should make strick policies regarding waste recycling. The initial reason for that is the constituition of almost every modern world country allow us to demand such policies as it exacerbate health related issues if not taken seriously. However on individual level it is extremly difficult to take innitiatives regarding waste recycling for several reasons such as not adequate fundings or big budget requirment .

I firmly believe that not enough waste is being recycled by the government . for instance just right in front of my home there is a huge pile of waste from homes while it is a private property shows the incompetency of both our government and citizens . The reason i blame government for that is there is no other options for citizens than to throw there homes waste in someone elses property. furthermore i believe it is the government responsibility to develop and implement policies .

All things considered i would say the initial step that government should take is to manage the homes waste which they have failed to manage secondary recycling of that waste is substancialy government responsibility as we pay high taxes for these reasons. Basic facilities should be provided by the governments and recycling and managing waste is directly related to our health as it increase the risk of respiratory diseases and we have some serious ramifications in front of us that revealed not enough policies and strict implimentations have been made by the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is broadly clear: you support government action and argue that waste management and recycling are public responsibilities. The example of a pile of household waste near your home is relevant, and you connect poor waste handling with health risks. However, the response only partly answers the specific question of whether laws are needed: it focuses more on government responsibility and facilities than on how legal requirements would increase recycling. The claim that citizens have no alternative but to dump waste on private property also needs explanation or evidence. Develop the argument by showing what a law would require, how it could be enforced, and why this would work better than education or improved collection services.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening position, supporting paragraphs and a concluding summary. Ideas are generally grouped by topic, and phrases such as “The initial reason” and “All things considered” signal relationships between points. However, progression is not always clear: the discussion moves from constitutional rights to funding, then to a local waste pile, without fully explaining the links. Some connectors are awkward or repetitive, and the final paragraph combines several claims in a long sequence. Use clearer topic sentences and develop one main point at a time; for example, separate the need for collection facilities from the case for legal obligations and penalties.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “recycling,” “policies,” “health-related issues,” “implement,” and “respiratory diseases,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “All things considered.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear: “vouch for the idea,” “not adequate fundings,” and “strict implementations” are not natural in these contexts. Spelling errors such as “crutial,” “strick,” and “substancialy” are noticeable. Build accuracy by learning common combinations such as “introduce legislation,” “provide adequate funding,” and “enforce regulations,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “if not taken seriously” and longer sentences that explain causes and consequences. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. For example, “the constituition … allow us” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “The reason i blame government for that is there is no other options” contains a faulty clause structure and agreement error. Several sentences run together, particularly in the conclusion. Practise building accurate sentences around one main clause, then add subordinate clauses; also check capitalisation, full stops and commas during proofreading.
