Los Angeles 2001 28 50

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided tabular graph depicts about the underground railway system in six cities - London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles. The data is calibrated in kilometers and numbers.

Overall it is crystal clear that London has the first underground railway system among these cities while Los Angeles has the latest. In addition Tokyo has the most amount of passengers followed by Paris.

At a fleeting glance it is clearly evident that London has first station along with longest route of 394 kilometers and 775 million passengers followed by Paris with second made station in 1900 with 199 units of route with 1191 million passengers standing at second highest whereas city of Tokyo has most of the passenger count at 1927 million with roue of 155 kilometers.

Moreover, Kyoto with less amount of route than Los Angeles has only 5 million less customers and the remaining station of Washington DC constructed in 1976 with route of 126 kilometers has more than 140 million travellers.

Looking at the given data it can be said that older or early constructed stations have higher number of passenger count than the comparison to the newly established ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the table, including the dates, route lengths, and passenger numbers. You have successfully identified the oldest and newest systems, as well as the busiest. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you state Kyoto has '5 million less customers' than Los Angeles, but the table shows a difference of 5 million (50 vs 45), which is accurate, yet the phrasing is a bit clunky. The overview is present but could be more analytical rather than just listing facts. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more precise and that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just stating the first and last.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to an overview and then into supporting details. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Looking at the given data', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the sentence structure in the third paragraph is quite long and dense, which makes it slightly harder to follow the comparison between London, Paris, and Tokyo. Improving the variety of linking words and breaking up overly long sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'calibrated', 'fleeting glance', and 'established'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'tabular graph' is technically incorrect as it is a table, not a graph. Phrases like 'second made station' and 'most amount of route' are unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations such as 'the oldest system' instead of 'first station' and 'the highest number of passengers' instead of 'most amount of passengers'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'depicts about the underground railway system' (should be 'depicts the...'), 'London has first station' (missing article), and 'with roue of 155 kilometers' (spelling error). There are also issues with punctuation and preposition usage. To achieve a higher score, work on article usage (a/the) and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing prepositions or auxiliary verbs.
