Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some overview information and mentioning several data points from the table, but failing to provide a fully developed or accurate summary. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 117 words, falling significantly short of the 150-word minimum. Key features such as general comparisons between the opening dates, route lengths, and passenger numbers are only superficially touched upon, and the writing misinterprets several statistics, such as claiming Tokyo and Kyoto experienced the lowest proportion when the underground railway system opened.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The response lacks a clear logical progression, starting with a brief introduction and an overall statement that contains typographical errors and mischaracterisations. The body of the text jumps between cities without a structured approach, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with a lack of clear separation between ideas, and cohesive devices are either absent or inappropriately used, such as clumsy transitions like 'however, kyoto and tokoyo experienced lowest proportion' and 'while on kyoto and los angles'.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer relies heavily on basic terms and struggles with spelling and word choice, seen in frequent typos and misspellings like 'overall' uncapitalised at the beginning of a sentence, 'tokoyo', 'comapred', 'ther', 'respactiveyl', and 'angles' instead of Angeles. There is little evidence of less common lexical items, and word forms are sometimes awkward or inaccurate for the context of describing statistical data tables.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There is a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex forms that are often faulty. Frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and prepositions occur throughout the text, such as missing capital letters at the start of sentences and proper nouns like 'paris' and 'london', as well as grammatical awkwardness in clauses like 'it carried 775 millions passengers carried at 394 kilometers of route'. These frequent errors create noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control over basic syntactic rules.
