Student answer (Band 6.0)
The column illustrates about the data of underground railway networks in six different cities such as London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Las Angeles with their openning dates, route distance and travellers per year.
Overall, People who travel in london cover longest route. Tokyo has the highest proportions of travellers in every year. Whereas, People of Kyoyo and Los Angeles cover very shorter distance with less ratio of passengers.
To start with, London started developed their undergroud railway systems in 1863 which covers the longest route of 394km with 775 millions of passengers per year. Next, Paris introduced their railway networks in 1900 with 199km of route with 1191 millions travellers every years. Moreover, Tokyo inititate their railway system in 1927 with 155km of distance with 1927 millions passanger per year which is the highest proportions of passangers every year as compare to others.
Furthermore, Washington DC introduced their railway systems in 1976 with 126km of track with 144 millions of travellers. On the other hand, Kyoto and Los Angeles stablished their railway system in 1981 and 2001 who covers least number of distance with 11km and 28km with less passangers of 45 millions and 50 millions respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the underground railway systems in the six given cities, supported by relevant data points such as opening dates, route lengths, and annual passenger numbers. The writer selects and reports key features well, such as noting that Tokyo has the highest annual passenger volume and London features the longest route. However, certain parts of the response are slightly under-developed; for instance, the comparison could have been extended more evenly across all cities rather than grouping them quickly at the end. The overview captures the main trends clearly, which satisfies the requirements for this band, showing elements of higher task fulfillment through a general summary while stopping short of fully extending all comparative insights.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, separating the introduction, the overall trend paragraph, and the detailed body paragraphs. Information is logically sequenced, moving from general statements to specific city data. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, and paragraphing could be managed with greater flexibility to fully achieve the next band level. Overall, the logical progression is maintained throughout the text, ensuring the reader can follow the comparisons without difficulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully discuss numerical data, dates, and transport networks. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'proportions', 'travellers', and 'route distance'. However, the vocabulary is limited and contains noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation, such as 'openning', 'longest route' instead of 'the longest route', 'inititate', 'passanger', and 'stablised'. Additionally, geographical names contain typos like 'Las Angeles' and 'Kyoyo'. These errors reflect a limited vocabulary range with occasional inaccuracies that stem from word-form slips and spelling issues, keeping the writing at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms to present the comparative data. There is good control over basic structures, and the response includes various dependent clauses and relative markers. However, there are some persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as 'People who travel in london cover longest route' (missing articles), 'London started developed' (incorrect verb form), and 'who covers least number of distance' (incorrect relative pronoun for a place/system). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the presence of error-free sentences alongside faulty complex structures points to the characteristics of this band.
