Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the six cities and report several key figures, including London’s route length, Tokyo’s passenger total, and the smaller systems in Kyoto and Los Angeles. However, the overview is not clearly stated, and some important comparisons are missing or inaccurate. London opened in 1863, not 1963; Tokyo opened in 1927, not 1926; and Los Angeles began in 2001, not 2000. The route lengths are also given without units in several places, and London’s figure is reported as 393 rather than 394. The response therefore covers the data only partially, with limited selection and some incorrect reporting. Add a concise overview highlighting the oldest and largest network, and the highest passenger use, then check every figure against the table.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into paragraphs and generally moves from London and Paris to the other cities, so the reader can follow the broad topic. You also use linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “In addition,” “Although,” and “Finally.” However, the organisation is mostly a sequence of city-by-city details rather than a clear comparison of the main patterns. Some links are inaccurate or awkward: “Although” does not express a clear contrast in the Tokyo sentence, while “on the other hand” introduces Washington and Kyoto without a well-defined opposing point. The final paragraph is also very brief. Grouping the oldest and longest systems together, then comparing passenger numbers and the newer, smaller networks, would create clearer progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “oldest,” “longest,” “distance,” and “passenger per year,” and the reader can usually identify the intended topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “railway station” for a railway system, “cover 199 distance,” and “passenger carry.” Spelling errors, including “undergroud,” “Tokya,” and “passanger,” also reduce clarity and control. Try to use precise terms consistently, such as “route length,” “annual passengers,” and “carried,” and avoid repeating “distance” when the table reports kilometres of route. Careful proofreading would help make the vocabulary more accurate and appropriate for a data summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “Although” and a comparison involving Washington DC and Kyoto. However, many sentences contain errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction, which sometimes make the relationships between figures difficult to understand. Examples include “it establish in 1963,” “it cover 393 Kilometer,” and “which is cover 199 distance.” The sentence beginning “Washington DC and Kyoto establish between 1976 to 1981” also has an unclear grammatical structure. Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and some sentence fragments. Practise accurate past-tense forms (“opened,” “covered,” “carried”) and build shorter, complete sentences before adding more complex comparisons.
