The take below gives information about the underground railway systems in six cities.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Underground Railway Systems

London 1863 394 775
Paris 1900 199 1191

Kyoto 1981 11 45
Los Angeles 2001 28 50

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides the information about the underground railway systems in six cities with their opening date, kilometers of route and the passegers per year.

Overall, the London introduced the underground railway first and has largest route while the Los Angeles introduce it at last and have second lowest route and passengers per year.

To begin with, the London where underground railway system was lounched in 1863 with the route of 394km and traveled 775 million passengers per year. By contrast, in paris, it was introduced in 1900 and have the route of 199km with the 1191 million passengers per year. Then in 1927, the tokyo was also joined this race and provide the route of 155 with the passengers 1927 million per year.

Now, Washington DC in 1976, jumped into this feild and provided the route of 126km and the passengers were accounted as 144 million per year. however, the Kyoto and Los Angeles was introdured in 1981 and 2001 with the routes measured as 11km and 28km while they have only only few passangers about 45 and 50 million in a year. Both this cities have small routes therefore, their passengers was also less.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover all three measures and give a useful overview: London is identified as the earliest system with the longest route, while Los Angeles is the newest and has the second-shortest route and passenger total. You also include relevant figures for each city. However, some comparisons are less fully developed. For example, Tokyo has the highest annual passenger figure, but this important feature is not highlighted in the overview; the body only reports the number. The final claim that Kyoto and Los Angeles have fewer passengers because their routes are short also oversimplifies the data. Make the key extremes explicit and compare passenger use with route length where relevant. The response meets the required length; nine words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two body sections that move from the older systems to the newer ones. This gives the reader a generally logical progression, and phrases such as “By contrast” help signal comparison. The organisation is therefore coherent, but some linking is mechanical or imprecise. “To begin with,” “Then,” and “Now” mainly mark sequence rather than show meaningful relationships, while “however” is not correctly positioned after the preceding sentence. The final sentence repeats the point that the two newer systems have short routes and low passenger totals. Use fewer, more precise transitions and group comparisons around the main patterns, such as route length and passenger numbers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the table’s main information, including “route,” “passengers per year,” “introduced,” and “measured.” There are also attempts at varied phrasing, such as “jumped into this field.” However, several word choices are unnatural or imprecise for a formal data summary: railway systems do not “travel” passengers, and “joined this race” is an informal metaphor. “Only few” is also an awkward expression. Spelling errors such as “passegers,” “lounched,” “feild,” and “introdured” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for standard reporting collocations and check spelling carefully; precise language such as “carried,” “recorded,” and “accounted for” would suit this task better.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “where” and “while,” and the main comparisons are usually understandable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly with articles, agreement, and verb forms. Examples include “the London introduced,” “the Los Angeles introduce it at last,” and “Both this cities have,” where article use, tense, or number agreement is faulty. In “the passengers were accounted as 144 million,” the grammatical pattern is also incorrect. Some sentences combine several details without clear grammatical control, as in the final sentence about Kyoto and Los Angeles. Practise consistent past-tense reporting and subject–verb agreement, and use shorter, well-controlled sentences when presenting several figures.
