IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Over the recent few decades, helping others is a good deed. Therefore, few masses believe that only rich people have more right to help needy ones than other individuals. I partially agree with this statement and discuss my viewpoints in the enumerated paragraphs.

To commence with, the reasons how rich people can help other people. First and formost is that wealthy people are more strong financially so, they can easily help people who cannot afford basic necessities of living such as food, shelter and clothes. Poor people are not able to fulfill their basic needs of living. Thus, people who have more money can easily help who need basic help. Another way to help individuals are they can pay expenses of education of which students who want to study but due to poor background their parents cannot afford expenses of study. Resultantly, they will be successful in life and secure their future. So, wealthy people are more able to help them because they have income.

On the other hand, there are various other ways to help individuals such as providing emotional support when they which do not need any kind of money. To explain it, money cannot buy happiness at higher level but, inner satisfaction is much important than it. It is the responsibility of every people to provide emotional support to others if they can. Moreover, masses can also help others such as they can help older people in crossing the road. It is the good qualities they have in their personality. So, instead of money people can help anyone in these ways also as it is a good value of lives.

In conclusion, although rich people can provide help in terms of monetary terms, yet people who have good heart they can help them in other ways such as giving them emotional supports.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is stated as “I partially agree,” and the response gives relevant reasons on both sides: wealthy people can fund basic needs and education, while others can offer emotional support or practical help. This addresses the central issue, but the argument is only partly developed. The essay does not clearly examine whether helping others is the most important benefit of being rich; instead, it mainly explains ways rich and non-rich people can help. The point about education is relevant, but its consequences are asserted rather than illustrated or explained in depth. Clarify what “partially agree” means—for example, acknowledge other benefits of wealth—and develop each main reason with a specific example or fuller explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. “On the other hand” signals the shift to non-financial help, and “In conclusion” makes the ending easy to identify. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated links such as “Thus,” “So,” and “Moreover.” Some references are unclear, particularly “they” in “students who want to study but due to poor background their parents cannot afford,” and the opening phrase “the reasons how rich people can help” does not establish a complete point. Improve cohesion by making each topic sentence a clear claim, varying transitions, and using precise nouns instead of unclear pronouns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “basic necessities,” “emotional support,” “inner satisfaction,” and “secure their future.” These expressions help communicate the contrast between financial and non-financial assistance. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or repetitive, which limits precision: “few masses,” “more strong financially,” “expenses of education,” and “good value of lives” are not idiomatic in this context. “Help” and “people” also recur frequently where more specific wording would make the argument clearer. Build accuracy by learning common collocations for charity, education, and personal support, and check word forms and spelling, as in “formost.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “although,” and “when.” This gives the response some structural variety, but complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the argument difficult to follow. For example, “Another way to help individuals are they can pay expenses” has a faulty sentence structure and subject–verb agreement; “when they which do not need” is also unclear. There are recurring problems with articles, plurals, and agreement, as in “every people” and “emotional supports.” Focus first on building accurate sentences with one main clause, then add subordinate clauses and check that subjects and verbs agree.
