IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

in today's world, it is important to help others. Few individuals think that the rich person only have responsibility to help someone, others argue that person who has no money. They also help others. I partially agree with this statement and discuss my view points in the upcoming paragraph.

2 comments with the, rich people can help poor families by giving them money, food and clothes. They can also donate money, hospitals and schools. However, rich people can use their money to improve their living conditions of poor people so that they can live a comfortable life. Wealthy people can provide financial support to poor people. Moreover, they can help poor people pay their medical bills and provide free treatment. They can build water facilities in village where people do not have clean drinking.

On the other hand, helping others is not only the duty of rich people. Poor people can also help others in many ways. They can help older people with their daily work. Further more, poor people can also support their neighbours by helping them with household chores and solving their problems. They can provide emotional support to others by giving love, care and advice. Educated people with the little money can I teach children for free. They can stand with other and offer help whenever needed. Poor people can give their old clothes to people who need them.

In conclusion, being rich gives people a chance to help others. Money should be used not only for our tabs, but I also help to needy people. Money is not important for helping others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both sides of the issue and state a partial position: wealthy people can offer financial and practical help, while people with less money can contribute in other ways. Examples such as paying medical bills, helping older people, and teaching children are relevant. However, the position is not fully clear: the introduction says “I partially agree,” but the conclusion shifts to “Money is not important for helping others” without explaining how this qualifies your agreement. Several points are listed rather than developed, and the opening discussion of what “the rich person” is responsible for is difficult to follow. Explain more directly whether the opportunity to help is the most important benefit of wealth, and support that judgement with a clear reason or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for wealthy and less wealthy people, and a conclusion. “On the other hand” signals the change in viewpoint effectively, and examples generally remain grouped with the relevant side. However, progression within paragraphs is often list-like, with several examples joined by “Moreover” or “Further more” rather than developed in a clear sequence. The opening phrase “2 comments with the” disrupts the transition into the first body paragraph, and the conclusion does not clearly resolve the contrast established earlier. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main point, then explain and illustrate it; also make references and transitions precise rather than relying on a series of additions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “financial support,” “medical bills,” “emotional support,” and “household chores.” These phrases help distinguish practical assistance from non-financial help. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unclear, such as “donate money, hospitals and schools,” “people who do not have clean drinking,” and “Money should be used not only for our tabs.” Repetition of “help,” “poor people,” and “money” also makes the writing less precise. Choose collocations carefully—for example, people can donate money to hospitals, and villages can lack clean drinking water—and use a wider range of accurate terms for assistance and beneficiaries.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use basic linking structures, including “so that they can live a comfortable life” and “by giving love, care and advice.” However, the range is limited, and frequent errors in sentence construction and agreement sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “Few individuals think that the rich person only have responsibility” has problems with the subject and verb, while “Educated people with the little money can I teach children” contains an unclear sentence structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “in village.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and proofread carefully for accidental words such as “I” in the teaching sentence. Build accuracy in simple sentences before adding more complex forms.
