IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Helping other or humanity is most important aspects in human life and people tend to help other only if they have proper resources and money to help. In this topic some people say that most important thing of being rich to help others and some simply disagree with this statement. As per my perspective, I strongly agree with this statement to larger extent, although it may not be the case all the times. The essay will express my argument with logical facts .

In this paragraph, I will emphasize that rich one has the opportunity to help others. Firstly, in most of the cases rich people are the only one which are donating and running many NGO's across the world and helping the needy people and most importantly if the person become rich then they have self interest on helping others which are in need. For example, many wealthy peoples and billionaire run many NGO's and donate large amount of money for the development, schools for food etc.

Furthermore, our education system and culture teach us to help other and when you achieve success and becoming rich then your main motive should be to grab the opportunity to help others and not to be selfish. For instance we have often heard many tales and story that how people when they become wealthy or rich tend to help others and in that there is a one story of Mahabharat Karna that when he become king he serve all his life donating and helping to the needy one and this take give the moral to all the human kind that if they become wealthy or not but do not forget their values of helping others.

Conversely, it depends fully on human if they want to grab the opportunity to help others while becoming rich or not because they become wealthy due to their own hard work.

To conclude, even though people become super wealthy or not their main focus should be on helping other and maintain the sake of humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments, such as the role of NGOs and the moral obligation to help others. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example of Karna is interesting but could be more effectively linked to the modern context of wealth. The argument in the third paragraph is slightly contradictory to your initial strong agreement, as it suggests that helping is entirely optional. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are fully extended and that your position remains consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Conversely', to signal the progression of your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the connection between ideas could be smoother. For example, the transition into the example of Karna feels a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this take give the moral', which hinders the overall flow. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'resources', 'development', and 'humanity'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'rich one has the opportunity' (should be 'the wealthy have') and 'self interest on helping' (should be 'interest in helping'). Some expressions are repetitive, and there are minor errors in word formation, such as 'many wealthy peoples' (should be 'people'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary is used in a natural, idiomatic way appropriate for an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('rich people are the only one which are donating'), missing articles, and incorrect verb tenses ('when he become king he serve'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall quality. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your score.
