IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

 

Student answer (Band 9.0)

Some people argue that the greatest benefit of being wealthy is the opportunity to help others. While wealth undoubtedly provides personal comfort and security, I strongly agree that its highest value lies in the positive impact it enables individuals to have on society.

The primary reason for this view is that financial resources allow people to solve problems on a scale that would otherwise be impossible. Wealthy individuals can fund hospitals, schools, scholarships, and scientific research, all of which contribute to long-term social development. In addition, charitable donations can provide immediate assistance to those affected by poverty, natural disasters, or illness. Unlike small individual contributions, large-scale philanthropy has the potential to transform entire communities and improve countless lives. Consequently, wealth becomes a powerful instrument for social progress rather than merely a symbol of personal success.

Another important point is that affluent people can support others by creating economic opportunities. Through investment and entrepreneurship, they establish businesses that generate employment, encourage innovation, and stimulate economic growth. As companies expand, they not only provide stable incomes for employees but also contribute tax revenue that supports public services. Therefore, responsible use of wealth can create a cycle of prosperity that benefits society as a whole instead of only the individual who possesses it.

Admittedly, being rich also offers significant personal advantages. Financial security enables people to access high-quality healthcare, education, and housing while reducing the stress associated with economic uncertainty. It also allows individuals to pursue personal interests and enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle. However, these benefits are largely confined to the wealthy themselves, whereas using financial resources to improve the lives of others generates far-reaching and lasting social value.

In conclusion, although wealth undoubtedly enhances an individual's quality of life, I firmly believe that its greatest significance lies in the opportunity it provides to help others. When used responsibly, wealth has the capacity to reduce inequality, promote development, and leave a meaningful legacy that extends well beyond personal achievement.
