Student answer (Band 7.0)

A thought of living in warmer weather has become increasingly common, while other section is of the mindset that living in colder weather is better. This is because change in lifestyle has taken mammoth dimensions. This essay will elucidate both the viewpoints followed by my opinion in the conclusion.

To commence with, the reasons behind preference to hot climates are access to outdoor activities and an escape from harsh winters. To expound, since longer sunny days boost the mood by giving a plethora of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities throughout the year, which eventually gives a riveting experience. Furthermore, the harsh winters are a struggle for many individuals. While the snow during severe cold weather may cause transportation interruption, it can also put people at risk of depression due to lack of sunlight which creates formidable situation for them. For instance, in 2024, an experiment was conducted in Canada which showcased that 78% of elderly people preferred summer over winter, as long brighter days in summer enable them to spend quality time outdoors with their families and also uplifts their moods. Hence, the above example vividly illustrates how a hot environment fosters happiness and prosperity.

On the contrary, the driving factor behind the trend of favouring cold climates is the winter sports which can only be enjoyed in snow. To elaborate, the younger generation, specifically those who are fond of winter sports such as skiing, skating and snowboarding, cherish the freezing temperatures more, in order that they can enjoy their favourite activities. Thus, the aforementioned reason substantiates why cold temperatures are given preference by some people.

To conclude, this essay has clearly discussed that year around scope to cherish outdoors and avoiding bitterly cold weather are the reasons why many people prefer hot climates, whereas also mentioned that an opportunity to engage in winter sports are the reason why some choose cold climates. In my opinion, both trends are justifiable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on whether the most important aspect of being rich is the opportunity to help others. However, the essay discusses the merits of living in hot versus cold climates. Because the student failed to address the prompt entirely, the task achievement score is severely impacted. While the essay is structured as an academic response, it does not engage with the specific question provided, making it impossible to evaluate the development of ideas regarding wealth or altruism.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-structured with clear paragraphing and logical progression. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'On the contrary', and 'To conclude' is effective and helps the reader follow the argument. Each paragraph has a clear topic sentence, and the ideas within the paragraphs are linked logically. Despite the content being irrelevant to the prompt, the organizational structure itself is quite strong and demonstrates a good grasp of how to build an academic essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is varied and generally appropriate for an academic context. Phrases like 'mammoth dimensions', 'elucidate both the viewpoints', 'plethora of opportunities', and 'substantiates' demonstrate a good range of lexical items. There are occasional minor issues with collocation, such as 'year around scope', but these do not impede communication. The student shows an ability to use less common vocabulary, which is a positive feature of their writing style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'other section is of the mindset' (should be 'the other section') and 'an opportunity to engage in winter sports are the reason' (subject-verb agreement error). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not cause difficulty for the reader. The control of punctuation and sentence construction is generally good, showing a reasonable level of grammatical competence.
