IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

According to a few individuals, the biggest advantage of being wealthy is to be able to help people. I strongly agree with this statement because financial independence can allow a person to donate or build something which can be beneficial to others.

Some people argue that affluent individuals pursue a most viable power of being helpful for someone in need. I am inclined to believe that rich people can afford to fund items which do not come under range of poor society. For instance, donation in order to develop infrastructure of schools for financially lower class children can make an impact on the educational system. In addition to that charity to old age homes can be beneficial to improve facilities for elderly people.

A good example is Anant Ambani in India who is considered under a member of richest family in world, has opened up a free animal shelter home where hundreds of abandoned animals are being taken care of.

In contrast to this statement, some rich families believe in personal growth only which can be a fair option for those who are not willing to support others. For example, the priority for a successful business man can be to expand their work internationally rather than investing in donations. The thought process of these individuals include investments in luxurious items, planning foreign trips and spending their money for fun.

In conclusion, wealthy people can take steps to contribute in growth and development of an indigent person by funding academics and many other causes along with working hard for personal expansion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and providing relevant arguments. You successfully discuss the role of wealth in helping others and provide a counter-argument regarding personal growth. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example of Anant Ambani is a bit brief and could have been better integrated to support your main point more robustly. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more depth and nuance, rather than just listing examples. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'For instance', and 'In contrast to this statement' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the referencing within sentences could be smoother; for example, the sentence about Anant Ambani is a bit clunky due to the phrasing 'considered under a member of'. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial independence', 'affluent', and 'indigent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pursue a most viable power' and 'come under range of poor society', which sound unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas more naturally and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'considered under a member of richest family' (should be 'considered a member of one of the richest families') and 'The thought process of these individuals include' (should be 'includes'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions in your final proofreading.
