IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Helping others is a fundamental human value that strengthens social bonds and promotes a compassionate society. Some individuals argue that the chance of supporting the underprivileged people is an essential aspect of being a wealthy person. I partially agree with this statement. This essay will analyse the reasons behind my perspective along with the examples in the subsequent paragraphs.

To commence with, elite people can provide financial resources which can improve the lives of people in need and contribute to the welfare of the the society. The affluent individuals can help poor people by providing basic need of the life including food, shelter and clothes. Rich people can provide medical support and employment to the individual in need. For instance, Ratan Tata was a famous and rich person who ran so many NGOs and also helped underprivileged individuals financially, providing basic requirements of a life as well as employment. This has developed a respect for him among poor people. Therefore, helping others will foster a culture of empathy ,corporation and mutual respect.

Conversely, some people who are capable of earning money may depend on the elite people's support. Individuals will not make any effort if everything is available free of cost. Poor will always seek for help from the wealthy ones. Everyone has a responsibility towards his/her family, so affluent people also have to fulfil their personal and professional duties. Sometimes charity may develop a sense of dependency and irresponsibility To exemplify this, an individual who is getting everything free from the government including food, shelter and clothes, do not prefer to work and take responsibilities. Hence, if everything is available free, this will create a culture of dependency and laziness in the society.

To conclude, although it is undeniable that high-income earners have a moral obligation to support the poor, this may develop a sense of irresponsibility and dependency among underprivileged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed the prompt well by presenting a balanced view. You clearly state your position in the introduction and support it with relevant arguments regarding the benefits of philanthropy and the potential for dependency. The ideas are extended and supported with examples, such as the mention of Ratan Tata and the general observation of government welfare. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion fully synthesises your arguments rather than just repeating the main points, and ensure the 'extent' of your agreement is more explicitly linked throughout the body paragraphs to maintain a stronger focus on the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Conversely', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the repetitive use of 'the' before 'society' or 'poor'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fundamental human value', 'underprivileged', and 'affluent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'corporation' (likely meant 'cooperation') and 'the the society'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrasing remains slightly simplistic. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices are consistently accurate to convey your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'an individual... do not prefer') and missing articles or incorrect article usage (e.g., 'the the society', 'the individual in need'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher band.
