IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 7.5)
For economists and social workers, few things are more crucial than wealth distribution and helping poor communities. In many developed and developing countries, a substantial amount of money is allocated to charity foundations and social welfare programs, as it often necessitates the use of various resources, such as donations, community centers, free schools, public hospitals, and so on. From my point of view, I strongly agree with the statement that the most important benefit of being rich is the ability to help others, as financial success allows wealthy people to reduce poverty, support public welfare, and improve human lives.
On the one hand, enjoying personal wealth in the form of buying luxury goods and living a comfortable lifestyle is considered more essential for personal happiness, creating reliable infrastructure for securing personal financial safety, buying modern homes, and traveling around the world that are not available from other sources. Consequently, it demonstrates unparalleled benefits for improving individual living standards and providing safe futures for family members, permeating and enhancing every conceivable sector of society. Since wealthy individuals seek comfort and personal independence through financial success, ample investment in personal asset management is imperative to elevate modern living standards. If this is adopted by governments and individuals alike, many successful business people stand to benefit significantly. Wealth-building models in nations such as the USA and Switzerland, for instance, have emerged as a pivotal model for economic progress, delivering enhanced services for their populations.
On the other hand, many philanthropists and community leaders may shy away from using wealth only for personal enjoyment without sharing resources with needy people due to a range of challenges, such as mental and physical health crises, financial constraints, adverse environmental conditions, technological barriers, resource limitations, fear of failure, and lack of support. While spending money on luxury items and personal gain is widely embraced in many major cities worldwide, vulnerable groups in impoverished and developing nations frequently contend with profound financial limitations and deteriorating conditions when striving to implement this approach. Admittedly, ignoring the noble truth that money spent on funding free schools, building public hospitals, and supporting emergency disaster relief creates lasting positive change in society, is not always appealing. From economic, social, and national perspectives, if the goals of true human fulfillment dictate that helping the poor, funding medical research, and uplifting weak communities are not merely options but an imperative, they may choose to embrace a perspective that heavily values charity work above all else.
In conclusion, it is the responsibility of individuals to evaluate the role of keeping wealth for private use versus using financial power to transform society and help poor people and determine whether it will do more harm than good. Thus, it is evident that fostering an interest in using individual wealth to help other people and improve society is beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. The introduction sets the stage well, and you provide arguments for both sides before concluding. However, the development of ideas is occasionally uneven. For instance, the second paragraph discusses the importance of personal wealth for happiness, which is a relevant counter-argument, but the connection back to the prompt's focus on 'helping others' could be more explicit. Your ideas are relevant, but some sentences, such as those discussing Swiss economic models, feel slightly tangential to the core debate about the moral importance of wealth. To reach a higher band, ensure every supporting point directly reinforces your stance on whether helping others is the most important aspect of wealth.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different viewpoints. However, some transitions between sentences are slightly mechanical, and the flow within the second paragraph is occasionally interrupted by complex, dense phrasing that makes the logical link between personal wealth and societal benefit feel a bit strained. Overall, the structure is clear, and the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'wealth distribution', 'philanthropists', 'imperative', and 'vulnerable groups'. You show an awareness of style and collocation, which allows for some precision. There are occasional instances where word choice is slightly awkward or overly formal, such as 'permeating and enhancing every conceivable sector of society', which feels a bit forced. However, you generally use vocabulary effectively to convey your meaning. To improve, focus on using less common items more naturally rather than relying on complex-sounding phrases that may not perfectly fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
You use a variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses and relative clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as the phrasing 'ignoring the noble truth that... is not always appealing', which is slightly clunky. Additionally, some sentences are quite long, which occasionally leads to a slight loss of clarity. Nevertheless, your grammar is strong enough to support your arguments without impeding communication, and you demonstrate a high level of control over complex structures.
