IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is undeniable that poverty has become a major concern in this modern era. In this regard, some people often believe that the greatest advantage of being wealthy is the ability to help others. I agree to a large extent with this notion due to many reasons which will outline in forthcoming fragments before reaching to a logical conclusion.

To commence with, wealthy people are in a better position to help individuals who are struggling financially. Firstly, they can donate money to charities and non-governmental organizations that provide food, shelter, and clothing to the poor. To explain it, they can sponsor the education of underprivileged children by offering scholarships, allowing them to achieve a better future. For example, a millionaire may donate funds to a charity that pays school fees for children from low-income families or covers the cost of life-saving surgeries for poor patients. Secondly, rich people can also pay for expensive medical treatments for patients who cannot afford healthcare. to elaborate it, financial support can save lives and significantly improve the well-being of disadvantaged people.

However, wealthy individuals can make a positive impact on society as a whole. First and foremost, many successful businessman and philanthropists invest in buildings which benefits thousand of people for many years. To justify it, they establish business that create employment opportunities, reducing unemployment and improving living standards. Furthermore, their contributions play a crucial role in the progress and development of society.

To conclude, many people strongly agree that the greatest advantage of being rich is the opportunity to help others. Yet by supporting individuals in need and investing in society, wealthy people can bring meaningful and long-term positive change to the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses the prompt well and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding both direct financial aid and broader societal investment. The ideas are extended with specific examples, such as scholarships and business creation, which supports your stance effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction does not contain meta-commentary like 'which will outline in forthcoming fragments,' as this is unnecessary and slightly unnatural. Instead, focus on clearly stating your position and outlining the main points of your argument directly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Firstly,' and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive in their structure (e.g., 'To explain it,' 'To justify it'). To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a clear central topic, which helps the reader follow your line of reasoning easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'underprivileged,' 'philanthropists,' and 'disadvantaged' correctly. There are some minor errors, such as 'successful businessman' (should be plural 'businessmen') and 'benefits thousand of people' (should be 'thousands'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that pluralization and word forms are consistently accurate throughout your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'reaching to a logical conclusion' (should be 'reaching a logical conclusion') and 'establish business that create' (should be 'establish businesses that create'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as starting a sentence with 'to elaborate it' without a capital letter. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent proofreading to catch these small errors.
