IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people believe that the most significant advantage of being wealthy is having the opportunity to assist others. In my opinion, while helping less fortunate people is a great benefit of having money, I do not think it is the single most important aspect of wealth. In this essay I will discuss both side with reason and examples.

On the one hand, I agree that many rich individuals use their wealth to support poor communities. A wealthy person has the financial power to provide high-quality facilities to those in need. For instance, some millionaires build free hospitals where poor patients can receive medical checkups and medicine without paying anything. This kind of charitable work can improve the lives of thousands of people and solve serious problems in society.

On the other hand, I disagree that all rich people help others purely for the welfare of society. In many cases, wealthy individuals donate money to charity mainly to build a positive public image, gain fame, or save money on taxes. By donating a small percentage of their income, they often gain double the benefits in return through lower tax payments and better business relationships. Therefore, their main motivation is often personal benefit rather than true kindness.

In conclusion, although having wealth gives people a great opportunity to assist others through charitable projects like free hospitals, these actions are frequently done for personal or business reasons. For this reason, while helping others is a major benefit of wealth, it is not the most important thing about being rich.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You acknowledge the benefit of helping others but argue that it is not the most important aspect of wealth, providing a counter-argument regarding the motivations of the wealthy. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of hospitals and tax incentives. To reach a higher band, you could further develop the 'most important' aspect by briefly discussing what might be considered more significant than philanthropy, such as personal freedom or security, to provide a more comprehensive comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'For instance,' and 'Therefore' effectively to link your points. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall flow of the argument. The structure is clear and consistent, making the text easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'less fortunate people,' 'financial power,' and 'positive public image' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or nuanced synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'wealth' or 'help.' Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede meaning. For example, 'In this essay I will discuss both side with reason and examples' contains a minor pluralization error ('sides') and a missing preposition ('reasons'). However, the majority of your writing is error-free. To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater consistency.
