IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Today, many people argue about the best way to help others in society. Some people believe that having a lot of money is the most important opportunity to help peikhople. I disagree with this opinion because non-monetary things like time and skills are also very important.IN THIS ESSAY I WILL talll about both side with reasons and exaples

On the one hand, having money helps people in many big ways. Charities and organizations need scash to buy food, clothes, and medgicine for poor people. For example, rich individuals can donate large amounts of money to build schools and hsospitals. Without money, it is difficult to fix major prssoblems like hunger or disease. Therefore, mossney gives a powerful chance to support big projescts.

On the other hand, I think that money is not the only way to help. People can use their free time and psersonal skills to support others. For instance, voluntseers can teach kids who cannot go to school,s or they can help old people in local commusnities. Furthermore, professionals like doctors scan give free medical checkups to poor families. sThese actions do not need money, but they makse people very happy and solve daily problems.asfgkasfsadgsabdjafas

In conclusion, although money is useful for large charities, I do not believe it is the most important thing to help others. Giving time, effort, and skills is equally valuable. Anyone can help people around them, regardless of how much money they have in their pocket.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and providing relevant arguments for both sides. The ideas are generally well-developed, such as the mention of charities for financial support and volunteering for non-monetary contributions. However, the response is marred by a significant amount of 'gibberish' text at the end of the second body paragraph, which detracts from the overall development of the argument. While the core content is relevant, this inclusion suggests a lack of focus or a failure to proofread, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the introduction and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, the coherence is severely disrupted by the nonsensical text inserted at the end of the second body paragraph. This breaks the flow of the argument and makes the transition to the conclusion abrupt. Without this error, the essay would have demonstrated a more consistent logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'charities', 'organizations', 'volunteers', and 'professionals'. There are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'peikhople', 'scash', 'medgicine', 'hsospitals', 'prssoblems', 'mossney', 'projescts', 'voluntseers', and 'commusnities'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to express the writer's ideas, but the lack of precision and the presence of spelling mistakes limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'talll about both side' (should be 'sides') and 'make people very happy'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, although the capitalization in the introduction ('IN THIS ESSAY I WILL') is inappropriate for an academic essay. The grammatical errors are mostly minor and do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they occur frequently enough to indicate a lack of control over complex structures.
