IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The most essential thing about being wealthy is that they could help to other people. I totally agree with the statement because they provide funds in charities and educations and they decreases the unemployment rates.

The rich person invest in charities and educations. many entrepreneurs provide funds in charity, some people could not afford food or clothes, so they can get the necessary things and rich individuals build schools and institutes, so low-income persons would get a quality educations and they could stable their career in future. For example, many wealthy individuals invest their money in developing countries, so their citizens would get the educations and stability in life.

Another reason is that rich people help in unemployment reductions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 119 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is severely limited. While you state a clear position, the arguments regarding charity and unemployment are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. The essay ends abruptly after only two paragraphs, leaving the task largely incomplete. To improve, you must expand your arguments with detailed explanations and examples to reach the required length, ensuring all parts of the prompt are addressed thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows some basic logical organization, with an introduction and body paragraphs. However, the progression is interrupted by the premature ending of the text. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and repetitive manner (e.g., 'Another reason is that...'). Paragraphing is present, but the lack of a conclusion and the brevity of the second body paragraph hinder the overall flow. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph is fully developed with a clear topic sentence and supporting details.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive terms such as 'help', 'rich', and 'funds'. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'they could stable their career' and 'help to other people'. To achieve a higher score, you need to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations related to the topic of wealth and social responsibility, and ensure words are used in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The rich person invest', 'they decreases') and incorrect preposition usage ('help to other people'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and expanding your range of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring they are grammatically accurate.
