IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It has been observed that the paramount thing about being rich is that one has the great chance to assist others. I agree with this viewpoint to a large extent. My inclination is explained in the ensuing paragraphs with valid reason and appropriate examples.

The fundamental reason for my stance is that, rich individual has a great resources as well as stable financial capabilities. Therefore, they can motivate needy person for their education, jobs or improve family problems. As a result, small steps can reach out the solution for others. For instance, world business tycoon Ambani has a significant financial background, they often help poor for food, education and employment sector to join their industry. As a result, individuals must have a chance to overcome from their problems. To add to this, donation as well as charity plays a vital role to support others. In this case, in orphanage or old citizens house may help for better lifestyle improvement. As a result, the standard of the people's life becomes appropriate.

Furthermore, wealthy people has a large popularity as well as respect among others so that their support is quite enough for everyone. Although some people have own guts to do everything independently, it often requires support, motivation, opportunity for jobs.

However, it is not overlooked that, excessive help make people greedy as well as dependant on them. it leads to negative impact on society.

To conclude, although too much support from rich people often develop issues, it has a significant importance to raise opportunity for others. Hence, it assist them for education, family issues to overcome the problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of financial support for education and the potential for dependency. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example of 'Ambani' is mentioned but not fully integrated into a cohesive argument, and the explanation of how wealth translates to 'respect' is brief. The essay covers all parts of the task, but the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it repeats some of the earlier phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In this case, in orphanage or old citizens house may help'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion needs more variety and precision to move beyond a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'paramount', 'inclination', and 'tycoon'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'overcome from their problems' (should be 'overcome their problems') and 'standard of the people's life becomes appropriate' (which is vague). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and the errors in word choice prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'rich individual has a great resources', 'wealthy people has a large popularity') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. The majority of the sentences contain minor errors, which is characteristic of the band 6 level. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural/singular nouns.
