IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Being rich is considered as a great chance to help other people and this is regarded as a vital thing about being rich. I completely agree with the statement as the rich people can contribute into charity, donation and creating employment.
Wealthy families have enough money left even after looking after personal well-being and needs. So, they still have some money to help others. such as through a donation and a charity in shelter homes or in charitable trusts. Additionally, some rich individuals get benefits through this help. They can show this charity amount to government and will not have to pay high amount of tax. Ultimately both the side get advantages, the one who donates and the one who gets that donation. Wealthy people also have capacity to help during natural disaster such as flood, tsunami, earthquake etc. Although, to do this charity or not is individual choice, at least they have the choice unlike middle class and lower class.
Rich individuals help others indirectly by creating new employment opportunities. Wealthy families are likely to start their own business to invest their money. This business creates opportunity for employment and helpful for unemployed public. For instance, when the rich man, Dhirubhai Ambani, started TATA company, it created numbers of job opportunity. Moreover, rich individuals can also support vaccine development, cancer research, climate change research by funding to research departments. Therefore, rich families are the one's which can benefits the society consciously or unconsciously.
In conclusion, individuals who are making lots of money have comparatively more chances to help others through donating money or investing their money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have identified two main ways the wealthy can help others: direct charity and indirect job creation. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of tax benefits and business investment. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the example of 'Dhirubhai Ambani' starting 'TATA' is factually incorrect, which slightly weakens the credibility of your argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are accurate and that you explore the implications of your points in greater depth rather than listing them.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition words such as 'Additionally,' 'Ultimately,' and 'Moreover' to guide the reader. However, some cohesive devices are used in a slightly mechanical way, and there are occasional issues with referencing. For example, the phrase 'the one's which can benefits' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which helps the overall structure, but the transition between the idea of tax benefits and natural disasters within the same paragraph could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'employment opportunities,' 'charitable trusts,' and 'vaccine development.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'contribute into charity' (should be 'contribute to'), 'high amount of tax' (should be 'high taxes'), and 'the one who gets that donation' (which is slightly informal). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the rich people', 'the one who donates'), subject-verb agreement ('rich families are the one's which can benefits'), and pluralization. For example, 'the rich man... started TATA company' contains errors in article usage and capitalization. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles in academic writing.
