IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Being wealthy provides people financial security and they can afford a better standard of living. However, some people believe that wealth also creates opportunities to help others. I agree with this view because rich individuals are in a stronger position to support people at both individual and community level.

Being rich increases people's access to all kind of resources and provide them greater freedom in most areas of life. This make people capable of helping those in need and allow them to improve quality of life for others. Rich people can help in many ways such as by funding education of a child, or providing a job opportunity or by supporting treatment of a cancer patient. For instance, helping a jobless person financially to develop his own business can have a lasting impact on him and his family.

Moreover, financially stable people can contribute to social development by investing in philanthropic schemes. They can donate community funds for infrastructure development, for charity hospitals or community schools. By doing this, they can benefit a whole community. Such as building a small charity hospital in a poor community will be a great initiative to fulfill their health needs. Another example of community level contribution is introducing microfinancing schemes for jobless people to help them earn for their families.

Hence, rich people can play a crucial role in improving the life of community people. They can provide support to individuals as well as can contribute at community level for the improvement at large. Therefore, I conclude that wealthy people can be a beneficial resource for others in need of financial support.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with specific examples, such as funding education, supporting cancer treatment, and implementing microfinancing. The argument is developed logically, moving from individual-level support to community-level contributions. While the ideas are well-presented, the depth of analysis could be slightly enhanced by acknowledging potential counter-arguments or exploring the nuances of 'wealth' beyond just financial capital to reach the highest band. However, the response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, ensuring the reader can navigate the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. You use relevant terms such as 'financial security', 'philanthropic schemes', 'infrastructure development', and 'microfinancing'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. However, there are occasional minor inaccuracies or repetitive phrasing, such as 'all kind of resources' (should be 'all kinds of') and 'community people' (which is slightly unnatural). Expanding your range of collocations and idiomatic expressions would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors that prevent a higher score. For example, subject-verb agreement issues appear, such as 'This make people' (should be 'This makes') and 'provide them' (should be 'provides'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'funding education of a child' (should be 'the education'). Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and you show a good command of sentence variety.
