IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often argued that the primary benefit of possessing great wealth is the capacity it provides to assist those in need. While philanthropy is undoubtedly a noble and impactful consequence of affluence, I disagree that it is the single most important aspect of being rich. In my view, personal financial security and the freedom of choice it affords are equally, if not more, significant.

On the one hand, the ability to engage in charitable acts is a profound advantage of wealth. Affluent individuals possess the resources to address systemic global issues, such as poverty, disease, and lack of education. For instance, large-scale foundations funded by billionaires have successfully eradicated tropical diseases and built schools in developing nations. This level of societal impact is exclusive to the wealthy and provides a sense of purpose that transcends material accumulation. Therefore, for many, the true value of wealth lies in its power to act as a force for global good.

However, viewing philanthropy as the ultimate purpose of wealth overlooks the fundamental human drive for personal security and autonomy. The most critical aspect of financial abundance for most individuals is the absolute eradication of economic anxiety. Wealth ensures access to premium healthcare, top-tier education, and a secure environment for one’s family. Furthermore, it grants the luxury of time and choice, allowing people to pursue passions, travel, and live without the constraints of mandatory labor. These personal benefits form the bedrock of individual happiness and stability, which must logically precede the ability to effectively help others.

In conclusion, while the opportunity to practice philanthropy is an incredibly fulfilling and important dimension of wealth, it cannot be definitively labeled as the most important. The personal freedom, security, and quality of life that riches guarantee are foundational benefits that hold equal merit.
