IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is commonly argued that the having possession to wealth and affluence makes the rich people more accountable for charitable contributions . Howbeit, I agree to the statement up to a greater extent.

Owing to the following reasons, it seems justifiable to agree with the statement. Perhaps the most prominent one is the affordability. To simplify it , rich people have the capability to afford the expenses and contributions that can be made to address some of the global problems such as, poverty, diseases and lack of education in order to help the needy ones ; however, the people with normal income cannot afford this all .. For instance, there are many billionaires and wealthy super film stars , sportsperson and businessman in the world who run many NGO’s , orphanages and old age homes to help the people which is not possible to afford for a normal person with average income. Therefore, it can be said that rich people can definitely have the opportunity to help needy ones.

Nevertheless, along with the societal obligations, rich people do also have a personal life , desires and wants . This is because they are also the human beings ,after all and they deserve to enjoy a luxurious life with the wealth they possess. It’s their fundamental right to enjoy the freedom of spending wherever they want regardless of their social responsibilities. Hence, there would be nothing wrong in saying that imposing the responsibility of charitable acts solely on affluent people is injustifiable from this perspective .

In conclusion, wealthy people are blessed with the ability to make others life better with their money and they must use this opportunity for the benefit of society. However , their personal desires and wants must not be overlooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that agrees with the importance of charitable giving while acknowledging the rights of the wealthy. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of NGOs and orphanages. However, the development is somewhat limited; the argument could be strengthened by exploring the nuance of 'opportunity' versus 'obligation' more deeply. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. Overall, the response is well-focused on the task, though the depth of analysis remains at a functional level rather than a highly sophisticated one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Owing to the following reasons', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation around these devices (e.g., 'However ,'). Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and subtle cohesive links that integrate the sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with attempts to use topic-specific terms like 'affluence', 'societal obligations', and 'fundamental right'. There are some awkward phrasings, such as 'having possession to wealth' and 'injustifiable', which slightly detract from the precision of the writing. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and natural collocation expected at higher bands. The student demonstrates a good grasp of general vocabulary but needs to work on more precise word choices and idiomatic expressions to improve the sophistication of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'the having possession to wealth', 'rich people do also have', and 'make others life better' (should be 'others' lives'). Additionally, there are several instances of incorrect spacing before punctuation marks (e.g., 'simplify it ,', 'injustifiable .'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring greater accuracy in articles and pluralization would be beneficial.
