IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people argue that the most significant advantage of being wealthy is having the capability to help others in need. I completely agree with this viewpoint because financial abundance provides both the stability and the resources required to make a meaningful difference in society.

To begin with, an individual's ability to support others is largely determined by their financial status. In modern society, earnings vary significantly depending on one's profession, ranging from small business owners to corporate employees. While middle-class citizens may wish to assist underprivileged individuals, their support is often limited because they must prioritize their own family expenses and financial security. In contrast, wealthy individuals possess surplus income beyond their basic living needs, enabling them to offer financial support more regularly and generously.

Furthermore, wealthy individuals have the unique opportunity to create large-scale social welfare systems. Because of their extensive financial capacity, they can fund initiatives that bring long-term benefits to society. For instance, affluent people can establish non-profit organizations, construct shelters for the homeless, or provide free meals for impoverished communities. These types of contributions not only address immediate hardship but also improve the overall well-being of the community, bringing immense personal fulfillment to the donor as well.

In conclusion, although people from all socioeconomic levels should assist others according to their means, wealthy individuals undoubtedly have greater opportunities to do so. Their ability to fund major charitable projects makes their wealth a powerful tool for social good. Consequently, it gives a confidence to an individuals to work hard to provide to needy people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have fully addressed the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. The essay explores the relationship between wealth and the capacity to help others, providing logical examples such as non-profit organizations and social welfare systems. The ideas are well-developed and the position is consistent throughout the response. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your analysis by briefly acknowledging the counter-argument—that non-monetary forms of help (like time or expertise) are also valuable—before refuting it, which would demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking and task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. The flow of information is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking, which indicates a high level of control over the structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'financial abundance', 'underprivileged individuals', and 'socioeconomic levels' show a strong command of topic-specific language. The word choice is generally precise and natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more idiomatic or less common collocations could elevate the score further. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and your use of language is consistently accurate throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You display a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and participial phrases (e.g., 'While middle-class citizens may wish to assist...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally strong. There is a minor error in the final sentence: 'it gives a confidence to an individuals', where the article 'a' is unnecessary and 'individuals' should be plural. Despite this, your grammatical control is solid, and you use a variety of structures that enhance the readability and sophistication of your writing.
