IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
With wealth comes great responsibility. Those who possess filthy riches are in the best position to help out others who may be struggling due to the rise of inflation and poverty. I strongly agree with this viewpoint and I am sure that many would believe that richness should be utilised wisely to aid others in the middle and working classes, who struggle to make it through with their comparatively limited income.
Firstly, I believe that it is crucial that we consider why rich people should invest more in helping out their peers. No one is in dire need of great riches- all we truly need is enough for comfortability. This refers to costs involving necessities such as clothes, food, drinks and housing- features that directly influence our lifestyles and quality of life. Surely some expenses should be dedicated to leisure and enjoyment, an escape from the serious matters of life. However, we do not need a plethora of richness that it becomes difficult to decide where to distribute it. Several studies have shown that millionaires have become so wealthy that it has made their life boring as there is nothing to look forward to, and they often struggle to figure out where to use their excess money. So, why not use it to help out those in need?
This overflowing wealth could be used to invest in aiding victims of poverty and malnourishment in war sites, where they may not even have a single penny in their pocket to help them. It is quite greedy to sit in your large home comfortably with an immeasureable amount of money in your account while someone else struggles to afford even the simplest of items. Though I wouldn't consider myself filthy rich, I still donate frequently to institutions aiding victims in Gaza, Congo and Sudan, and I am sure that someone with tenfold my wealth can do a lot more. You could either help relatives around you who may not be as fortunate as you to have a fortune in their possession, or help those struggling in countries facing economic and social recess.
In conclusion, I fully support the claim that the most beneficial thing to come out of being rich is the opportunity to help others, especially once you have reached maximum comfortability financially. No one needs millions in their bank accounts to keep for themselves, so why not help the struggling instead? I believe that is one of the greatest opportunities you have as a rich person.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear, consistent position throughout. The arguments are well-developed, particularly the distinction between basic needs and excess wealth, and the moral obligation to assist those in poverty. The ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the mention of specific regions in need. While the tone is occasionally informal (e.g., 'filthy riches'), the central argument is logically supported and directly answers the 'to what extent' component of the task. The conclusion effectively reinforces the initial stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, and the transition between the definition of needs and the moral argument for charity is smooth. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking phrases could elevate the flow further to a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some effective collocations like 'dire need', 'excess money', and 'economic and social recess'. However, there is an occasional reliance on slightly informal or imprecise phrasing, such as 'filthy riches' or 'make it through'. While these do not impede communication, they slightly limit the academic tone. The range is adequate to convey complex ideas, and there are no significant spelling errors that distract from the message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, with few errors that interfere with meaning. Examples of complex structures include 'Those who possess... are in the best position to help out others who may be struggling...' and 'It is quite greedy to sit in your large home... while someone else struggles...'. Punctuation is generally accurate. While there are some minor slips, the majority of the sentences are error-free, reflecting a solid command of English grammar.
